Coal-producing states vowed full-scale resistance, including outright defiance, of President Barack Obamas curbs on greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants.
While states economically reliant on coal have fought draft rules in court and promised to do so again, their battle might escalate to ignoring restrictions entirely.
If the final rule is not significantly improved, then Hoosiers can be assured that on behalf of families, businesses and other ratepayers, Indiana will not comply, Republican Governor Mike Pence said in a statement.
At stake, these states say, is the future of the coal industry as well as affordable electricity for consumers. The governors argue that the White House is exceeding its authority and giving the Environmental Protection Agency powers it doesnt legally possess.

(14,255 posts)investments in tatters, loss of tax revenue - this will affect the workers and the towns so very badly.
I think solar is the future (at least for now, maybe something better will come along), but there will be a billion solar panels WITHOUT there being some sort of decree, and the huge grids and fossil fuel plants and reactors will be obsolete. They should be looking to invest in that now, not later. The power companies, I think, will force people away from their grids, by charging a lot to connect. I hope they are punished for that, by seeing smaller neighborhood grids and storage. Which makes more sense anyway. The supply chain to the big plants won't be needed.

(11,795 posts)There are already no jobs here. The brightest students leave (and who can blame them). There's very little diversity here. Drug problems and homelessness are rampant in my town, which is the only "bright spot" on the map in this state. And the state is controlled by cronyism down to the very local level. It's atrocious.
