Grassley cannot get Hillary, so he goes after Huma Abedin

The State Department’s inspector general found earlier this year that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton, was overpaid by almost $10,000 for unused leave time when she left the government, Ms. Abedin’s lawyer said Friday.

The inspector general concluded that Ms. Abedin should refund the money, saying she didn’t accurately account for her leave when she took a vacation in August 2011 and when she had a baby later that year. Ms. Abedin is challenging the finding, and State Department officials have yet to decide the issue.

Mr. Grassley’s letter cited “potential criminal conduct,” but the issue apparently never became a criminal matter because a subsequent letter written in May by Ms. Abedin’s lawyers to a State Department agency indicates the government asked her to refund the disputed amount.

In Mr. Grassley’s letter concerning Ms. Abedin, the senator focused on the payment, initially said to be $33,000, that she received from the State Department in May 2013. It was intended to reflect leave time Ms. Abedin earned but didn’t take during her time at the department and as a Senate aide.

The inspector general ultimately concluded $9,857.73 of the payment to Ms. Abedin was unmerited. The inspector general’s office declined to comment Friday. The State Department said it had received Mr. Grassley’s letter and would review it.

According to a May letter to the department from Miguel Rodriguez, another lawyer for Ms. Abedin, she worked such long hours, even when out of the office, that she clearly wasn’t overpaid. Ms. Abedin was known to frequently work 16- or 20-hour days, and in an average month sent about 1,592 emails, the letter said. In January and February of 2012, when she was home with her baby, she sent about 1,000 emails, Mr. Rodriguez said.
