I've been in contact with TTW for the past week, and here's what the situation is now for anyone that has been wondering.
The eviction took place the 6th of July. TTW did some couch surfing and house sitting at first, and then found a tiny room to rent in a house with other tenants. It's basically a rooming house situation, with a shared kitchen and bathroom, though TTW does have a tiny bathroom of her own consisting of a sink and toilet. The sink doesn't work, but she does at least have her own potty, and is grateful for that.
She told me last week that she had gotten "lucky as hell" with Yoshi, as a doggie-daycare place had, given her situation, agreed at the last minute to take him for as long as needed, with no money up front and the charges (if any at all) could be worked out later. They get an awful lot of donated food, so no problem with that. They said that he would have his own large pen indoors in the air conditioning, and the first week he was there they would call TTW often and she was told that Yoshi was doing great and was happy. The daycare is a distance from where TTW lives, and given that distance and her Monday through Friday job, she can only get there to see him once a week, on the weekend.
Last weekend, they brought him outside for her visit, and given that it was very hot and there was only hot concrete for them to be on, TTW kept the visit short so Yoshi could get off the concrete and back into the A/C. She had them take him back inside before she left, so he wouldn't see her leaving. She cried all the way home, but thought that he was doing all right other than missing her.
She called ahead again this week, a couple of days ago, and arranged to visit him again today. When she arrived, she was told that "he was sleeping" and that therefore now wasn't a good time, and that she'd need to reschedule. That set off alarm bells, and she insisted that they get him for her. After an employee huddle discussing it, they went and got him and brought him out.
TTW told me that he looked horrible -- he has lost weight, his hair is falling out, and he was listless and didn't even seem to recognize her. The difference from last week to this one was astounding. She got very upset and demanded to see where he was being kept indoors. It turns out that the "very large pen" is a very small crate, not big enough for him to even turn around in. There was no water dish. There is A/C, but not set cool enough for a dog with a coat like Yoshi's (the other dogs there are shorter-haired). When he's outside, the area he's allowed to be in is all concrete with full sun. When he's indoors, it's in the tiny crate with no water dish. TTW said that when they first brought him out today, he went to every available water source and drained them, and was still looking for more.
I spent over two hours on the phone with TTW tonight. She's terrified that Yoshi is going to die there, that he's dehydrated, overheated, and is being essentially tortured to death. She's afraid he may die in the next few days, if left there. She was crying so hard I could barely understand what she was saying a good deal of the time.
She has not yet been able to retrieve her belongings from the place she was evicted from. She has nowhere to put them, as it's only a room she is renting and a small one at that. The place she's at right now is unsafe, I won't go into detail as to the particulars, but it isn't a safe place to be at all.
She is working. Between the rent and gas for the car to get to work, plus basic living expenses such as food and toilet paper, etc.., she won't be able to get a place of her own for her and Yoshi for some time. She would need first/last rent + deposit, and she doesn't make enough to save that up for a few months out.
She's terrified that Yoshi isn't going to make it. She is doing all she can to get a place for them, she's doing it for Yoshi, but he isn't doing well at all where he is. He's in pretty bad shape already.
So yes, this is a plea, on TTW's behalf, for any financial help that anyone on DU sees fit to offer.
She desperately needs to get a place where she can live with Yoshi and bring him back to health. I don't have a target dollar amount. I only know that she's been working, has been doing what she can, and yet Yoshi is in dire straits.
I'm the one asking on her behalf. I don't know if she could bring herself to ask again anyway, but the point is moot as her computer is down with a virus and largely unusable. I figure it can't hurt to throw this out there (yes, again!), and see if DU can help some more in any way.
TTW has been beaten up and hammered for asking for help here in the past. If you don't want to help, if you think this all a scam, if you just want to stick another knife in because of some past issue with her, please keep your comments to yourself this time. Yes, it's a public message board, yada yada, but it's also hard as hell to ask for help and, in my opinion, deplorable to be piled on the way she has been by a few. Show some class and just go your own way, please. Please.
For anyone who can help and sees fit to do so, here is TTW's gofundme: http://www.gofundme.com/slumlord-escape
TTW is my friend. Thank you in advance for anything you can do for her, and if you can't -- at least, please, just leave it alone.

It can be argued (and I'm sure you and perhaps others are just itching to) that giving him up forever would have been the thing to do. I'm not going to argue the point one way or another. Thank you for your reply.

(65,490 posts)For someone who has been beaten down by life, an animal companion is often the only thing that keeps them going.
Many people have died during natural disasters because they could not accept rescue if they couldn't bring their animal companions to safety with them. I fully understand that feeling.
TTW needs Yoshi, and he needs her.
Moosepoop

(5,075 posts)I can't answer for other rescues, but the one I work with has been known to try to pay outlandish rental deposits or send someone over several times a week to help care for an elderly person's animal--anything to avoid having one more homeless animal to foster and place. So I think it would be worth a call to the Akita rescues, and if they're not useful, to a generic dog rescue. They at least would be a good source of information about other resources in the area. If you could you do that for her, it would be a wonderful advocacy. I hope some of the offers of places for Yoshi on this thread and others work out too.
Edited to say: Send someONE over

If for whatever reason you can't find it in your heart to help TTW, can't those who have a little money to spare at least do a bit for Yoshi? If a lot of people donated even $5 or $10, it would accumulate quickly, especially if some could donate a bit more.

SheilaT
(23,156 posts)Over a period of several months and several lengthy threads, she was frequently offered a lot of help, which she either ignored or came back with one excuse after another why that wouldn't work. She was offered a place for Yoshi, a place for her, help in getting employment, and members donated money.
I do understand privacy issues, but many of us who have been following this whole thing are rather skeptical that anything will change. Other than the details.

(23,156 posts)she's gotten more than one good offer to take Yoshi. She got similar offers in the past and never acted on them. Instead, she's given the dog over to a very sketchy doggie day care. Oh, and she's also been given information about Akita rescue groups in her area.
I will await with baited breath a report that she's placed the dog with one of the above, along with new photos.

(3,580 posts)I can't take yoshi. I wish I could because I have done it in the past, taken animals when the owners are in crisis. I've had to find homes for 3 horses, 2goats,6 dogs and 4 cats in the last 6 months because I can't keep my farm. I've still got 3 dogs and 2 cats and 4 chickens. Since my husband died I am losing everything I've loved on this farm but I am lucky that I still have my family. I found out I'm looking at another surgery and will be out of work for 3 months. I'm putting it off until I can find homes for the rest of the animals. I'm planning ahead now for the worst case scenario. I will put 2 of the dogs down when it gets close because they are both elderly and have cancer. So I have my husband's dog to find s home for. When he goes all I have left of my husband are his ashes.
I didn't mean to hijack the thread but I said this because when I say ttw has to do the right thing by her dog I am not being glib or off hand. She owns that dog, if she can't resolve this in the next few days she needs to think about surrendering him.
Moosepoop
(1,922 posts)Your situation is awful!!! I feel terrible for you, and I wish you the best for your situation!!! I'm sure you would have taken Yoshi if your circumstances hadn't changed the way they have.

(3,580 posts)I don't think I'll have a problem with the chickens. Although like any animal you no longer have they may wind up being eaten someday. The cats are all neutered semi feral barn cats. Very sweet and they do allow me to pet them but they have their territory. I have an emergency plan for Joe. A friend would temporarily take him. I think if I only have one pet I may be able to find an apartment that would allow a pet. I have looked at about 10 apartments that allow pets. The barn cats are a crap shoot. I do have friends with farms but knowing barn cats they could be rehomed and disappear. I think any cat can be a house cat but they would need someone who could help them transition. I'm not going to abandon them. They will get a home. I have a contact with an agency that rehomed barn cats. I had to get over my own ego that no one would take care of them like I would.
The worst thing for them is not s new home but to suffer because I'm in a crisis.

(3,580 posts)Joe is a hound shepherd mix. He's around 12 years old. My husband used to call him the head of security. He's neutered. Housebroken. And in his old age he just as soon sit on the porch than roam.
Cats are older neutered males. 2 are friendly, 1 is scared of people. Chickens are all hens.
2 old dogs are rescued hounds. Spayed females. Both have cancer. One is not holding her weight. Last time the vet was out she said sooner rather than later.
I'm still working on shameless appeals to friends but appreciate you offer. I was not wanting to give them up so soon but when s good home comes along, I'll take it. I'm happy to say the problem pony is adored in her new home. I thought she'd be the hardest to place but the right person came along and I couldn't pass it up. She is being loved on by a young girl that thinks the big headed pigeontoed evil pony with the stride of a 3 legged gerbil is a rainbow farting princess unicorn.

(14,881 posts)About Big East Akita Rescue
B.E.A.R. is a 501(c)3 charitable Akita rescue group in the United States that does hands-on rescue, and is totally manned by volunteers. BEAR was founded in 2011 by a small group of concerned Akita owners and volunteers that wanted to help the breed due to the number of Akitas in need in the metropolitan Tri-State area of NY, NJ, PA and also throughout the Northeast.
Our highest priority is to save, rehabilitate, and find forever homes for URGENT Akitas in area shelters; however, we also address a wide variety of Akita services such as educating potential owners, providing referrals, lending support to Akita owners, and making evaluations of Akitas in private homes and shelters. We are active members of our national parent breed club, The Akita Club of America, and assist with gathering information against breed-specific legislation. We help as many Akitas as we can but sadly no one can save them all: there are too many. It is our hope that one day there will be no more abandoned, abused, neglected, or unwanted Akitas.

I would make a quick list of priorities, get back what stuff you can with Yoshi as #1 on the list. You had mentioned furniture before: I would put that last on the list. You can replace it and it's not worth anything for re-sale. You mentioned underwear: you can buy cheap $1 underwear at the dollar store. and get other clothes dirt cheap at salvation army and other charity places.

(19,568 posts)All thanks go to Moosepoop for bringing this to everyone's attention and DUer msanthrope and her ex. I'm not sure if her ex is a Duer or not, but they are a kind heart either way!
Best wishes to TTW. I've been down before, too. At least now Yoshi is safe!

(4,019 posts)If they are keeping large dogs in small crates and withholding water, they are abusing the animals. I am glad that Yoshi made it out okay but the other pet owners who use this "doggie day care" may have NO idea that they are being neglected and are in a dangerous situation.
They were obviously trying to hide their negligence by bringing Yoshi outside, etc. This is a serious issue and TTW was worried that Yoshi was being tortured to death and was going to die there. For the sake of the other animals there, this "day care" needs to be reported. ASAP.
