Malarkodi was exposed to mercury poisoning, along with a thousand others at Unilevers Kodaikanal thermometer assembly plant. The factory operators did not give its workers any protective equipment or information about the disastrous impact that mercury has on health.
The factory owned by Hindustan Unilever also dumped toxic mercury around their plant, and this has not been cleaned up in the 14 years since this plant was shut down. The contamination continues to impact forests and groundwater.
The workers cannot afford private healthcare. They have been fighting for Unilever to clean up the toxic contamination and compensate them for their medical expenses as a result of mercury for many long years. They need us to stand with them now, more than ever.

(9,148 posts)Good to hear they have their money going to a most worthy foundation.
The foundation donation is one thing, but did Ben & Jerry have a charity for their share of money given?
No gotcha here, just a fair question as to political money trails. Especially in this campaign.
Jeb has over $100million in dark money. They all are suspect. Even good ol Ben & Jerrys.

(5,514 posts)FYI, Ben & Jerry's does have a charity, called the Ben & Jerry's Foundation, which supports some amazing social and environmental justice projects.

(9,148 posts)..what they were intended to do. Good works in the public interest. Yet they seem to be both be questioned as to that trickle down effect, just wonder why all corps aren't held to the same scrutiny.
Hope Unilever is held to account for the mercury issue & all subsidiaries are cleared & it begins & ends with Unilever itself.

(9,148 posts)All money should be looked at. Considering the mercury issue, its only fair then, to look deeper at associations.
If they are on the up & up then great.
Next?

(9,148 posts)The mercury issue caused the associations to be questioned.
Great they donated to the Clinton Foundation. Thats not a problem.
Looking further into donated money clears their name of suspicions & I realize Ben & Jerrys is a great brand with All American roots & charm.
But at this point & with all the dark money out there, its only fair to look at all associations with the Unilever Co.
Nothing wrong with this. Its what we need more of, follow the money & all.
I see no reason to have any problem with this.
Thrre's no hidden agenda, no gotcha, just fair questions when the issue of mercury poisoning came up.
If we had more watchdogs & checks & balances for corporations & follow the money trail, that would level the corporate unbalanced playing field somewhat.
Hopefully there's no trickle down money issue with our beloved Ben & Jerrys and we can move on to other companies under the Unilever Brand.
Glad the Clinton Foundation is found to be squeaky clean
Appreciate that info.
Thanks

(9,148 posts)Ben & Jerrys just happened to be next on the list.
Hope their name is cleared & life moves forward.
Until we find out more, we can remain patient but cautious as this will be a bitter campaign, considering the millions of dollars invested and hidden.
Its all fair. The issue would not be in question had Unilever not put themselves in the spotlight with the mercury issue.
It now opens the door of suspicion to their associations.
The same way any corporation works. Its that trickle down effect.
Thats it.
Bye.
