Fundraising for park to tell black experience stalls as supporters overhaul their efforts (NC)

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Supporters of a park that would showcase the black experience in North Carolina ... need to raise $5 million for the North Carolina Freedom Monument Park, which would be located in downtown Raleigh. They've raised about $700,000 so far, but that money was used for planning and development and is not part of the capital needed to build monuments.

... Kel Landis, former chief executive officer of RBC Centura and a member of the park's campaign committee ... and other supporters hope the project will gain momentum now that the public focus has turned to the Confederate flag and monuments ...

Some potential donors have noted that the park concentrates on tragedies of the past ...

Attorney Chuck Watts of Durham, another member of the fundraising committee, said the park is too important to fail, especially in a state with only a few monuments to blacks ...
