(8,543 posts)That feature of Google Translate was developed by Quest Visual years ago as the app Word Lens. When Google bought the company last year, they made the app available for free while it was being incorporated into Google Translate. The fact that it was made free last year was widely shared on social media at the time - I'm surprised you missed it, I'm pretty sure there were threads about it here.
All that being said, it is a remarkable piece of software. Another amazing app for mobile devices is the MyScript Stylus handwriting keyboard. Available for iOS8 and as a beta version for Android. It works surprisingly well with no stylus (just using a finger) on my iPad.
Before that they released their MyScript Calculator app, which is also awe inspiring - although it isn't free (it's only a few dollars - well worth it to help keep the developers working on new and better things).
