I have a serious suggestion for the widely reviled Minnesota Dentist/Hunter/Poacher Walter Palmer, as follows:

First, fire that very expensive PR firm, they can't possibly put a good spin on the senseless murder of Cecil the Lion. Your sniveling "regrets" are simply pathetic.

Zimbabwe says they seek your extradition, which you have the wherewithal to fight, and given the squalid state of Zimbabwe's prisons the US is likely to agree with you, even if everyone agreed you would likely get a fair trial there. And I'm pretty sure you could find your very own Johnny Cochran and beat the rap here in the US courts. But such a victory would be pyrrhic at best, thus my suggestion:

Offer to the Zimbabwean authorities, in lieu of a fine and prison, none of which would solve anything (except perhaps to send a clear message to other potential hunters), to move yourself there and open a free dental clinic, and practice your profession among people who need it (a lot more than your wealthy Bloomington clientele) for five years. You'd have to agree to wear a monitoring device and stay there for the duration, and no hunting with anything but a camera, but I'm pretty sure you would emerge a far better human being than you are today or that you would be if you did anything else for that period of time.

Poor Dental Hygiene can lead to other serious health issues since bad gums is an easy way for bacteria to enter the blood system. If this idiot has money to burn on canned hunts for trophy kills then he can afford to shutter his practice a few years and open up a clinic in Zimbabwe where he can provide free dental care for a few years for the people of Zimbabwe. Shooting an animal that stands there and allows you to walk up is not hunting. Example, killing Moose is not hunting. There are many animals that have no fear of humans. Killing them is not hunting. It is stupid unless you need food.

Nossir, our man Dick, he has himself flown over, in Air Force 2, on the taxpayer's tab, accompanied by his most favoritest shotgun, to the exclusive Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, in rural Pennsylvania, to have himself a nice, cushy "canned" pheasant hunt.

This is what it was: Dick and about nine other overfed white guys sitting in a comfy luxury blind with their manly shotguns, waiting for the Westmoreland guy stationed behind them on a hill to release clusters of stunned, fat, tame game birds from a net. Then they shoot them.

It was never clearly reported what happened to the slaughtered birds. The above article suggests that they were gutted, de-feathered, cleaned and vacuum packed. I suspect otherwise. I think they were thrown in a ditch and covered over with dirt. No spokesperson from the club ever made a detailed statement. As I recall, the one worker who spoke up in the first instance never made a follow-up statement.

I am utterly appalled by the lion's slow death. But the Internet mobbing of the guy? That is even worse, I think.

The tradition of a community coming together to express violent hate for an outcast (or outcast group) is ancient. Jesus (so goes the story) confronted the mob who wanted to stone the adulteress. The Puritans pursued witches and Quakers and anyone who didn't quite fit in. In my second grade class they went after the spazzy kid and in my third grade class it was the fat kid. And at summer camp they tormented a shy awkward girl who messed around with some boys and got branded a slut (yeah, that was me. I damn near killed myself that summer).

People will now argue, "But he is EVIL and he deserves it!". Well, he deserves punishment under the law, yes. But all this hatred vomiting forth - what does it do for the vomiters? Why are so many people now delighting in spewing invectives and fantasizing - publicly, communally - about this man's ruin, humiliation, and disembowelment? It's a bonding experience. It's people saying "We're all in the same tribe - the superior tribe! - because we all loathe and despise the same dirty filthy outsider. Let's destroy him! Cool! It's a party!"

Of course we have seen this many times before. On the Internet and off it.

These attacks on the dentist are not any kind of "justice". What do they accomplish? They simply feel oh so good and oh so righteous. They are expressions of delicious, intoxicating mob violence against an "acceptable" target that the majority has agreed on, and that no one will defend, and who is so vastly outnumbered that he has no hope of defending himself. The mob loves a defenseless victim who "deserves" the gang rape or murderous pounding they wanna give him.

Of course, I'm a Jew. Show me tens of thousands of people all screaming in unison for the annihilation of an evil greedy subhuman man who embodies everything we love to hate, and I get really nervous. And when those acreaming for his annihilation are the theoretically liberal people - the ones who preen and pride themselves on their peace and tolerance! - well, I start smelling smoke.
