Walter Palmer — the dentist who killed Zimbabwe’s Cecil the lion — faces calls for prosecution

http://www.rawstory.com/2015/07/dentist-who-killed-cecil-the-lion-faces-calls-for-prosecution/

Former speaker of the US House of Representatives Newt Gringrich tweeted that Palmer should be jailed.

Betty McCollum, a Republican member of Congress who represents Minnesota, called on the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Justice to investigate whether the killing violated endangered species laws, according to the local Star Tribune .

The African lion isn't listed with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an endangered species. PoliticAverse Jul 2015 #6
Maybe because there are no African lions running wild in the US. LisaL Jul 2015 #7

No, it is because of the number of lions. They are listed as proposed threatened, not endangered. DesMoinesDem Jul 2015 #17

Zimbabwean officials: American man wanted in killing of Cecil the lion

(CNN)An American man is being sought in connection with a case that has drawn international attention -- the killing of Cecil the lion -- Zimbabwean officials said Tuesday.

The man suspected in Cecil's death is Walter James Palmer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, according to Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

Cecil, who was 13, was a prized lion in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, where visitors reportedly sighted him frequently. A video of the animal, regal, indifferent and sleepy-eyed, has been widely disseminated.

He was a participant in a study that Oxford University in Britain was conducting, and he had been outfitted with a GPS collar.

A police official in Zimbabwe said that two Zimbabweans had been arrested in the case and that police were looking for Palmer.

nothing is going to happen to him he can't afford and the man obviously has no morals so he's not losing any sleep over the shooting; maybe over loss of revenue, but plenty of right wing idiots will patronize his establishment just for show (see the Chick-fil-A kerfuffle).

One would think the dramatically obvious need not be stated... but there it is. A need for the absurdly straight-forward to be pointed to.

That sounds like a pretty dicey proposition.

Does anyone whether President Mugabe has expressed an interest in this matter?

Dentist should be prosecuted, jailed, and have to donate at least that same $50K to a wildlife conservation effort like http://www.wildcru.org/ every year for the rest of his life.

Hunting is a coward’s pastime. If, as has been reported, this dentist and his guides lured Cecil out of the park with food so as to shoot him on private property, because shooting him in the park would have been illegal, he needs to be extradited, charged, and, preferably, hanged. To get a thrill at the cost of a life, this man gunned down a beloved lion, Cecil with a high-powered weapon. All wild animals are beloved by their own mates and infants, but to hunters like this overblown, over-privileged little man, who lack empathy, understanding, and respect for living creatures, they are merely targets to kill, decapitate, and hang up on a wall as a trophy. The photograph of this dentist, smiling over the corpse of another animal, who, like Cecil, wanted only to be left in peace, will disgust every caring soul in the world.

I hope his practice fails so he won't be able to afford any more thrill killing expeditions.
