Maybe they will take care of each other after we are all gone.

Edit to add: Wildlife will most likely be better off after mankind is gone.

6. these swans are amazing...and the koi are too.

we had a koi pond at one point. beautiful creatures. but they were also super aware of their surroundings and would beg for food, which caused problems from time to time, as visitors would give them everything from birthday cake to BBQ. not good for the fish.

8. I would always preface my Koi comments with 'You'll think I'm nuts but'

when talking about my Koi. They WERE really social and had completely different personalities! Moby was always looking for attention, Angel was very shy and sweet, and they all had different behaviors. It's outside our thought process to think of fish as having personalities, isn't it? But I know from experience that they do.... Love the swans feeding them! I've definitely seen birds amuse themselves and playing games... of course they do!

The people that think a hook in their face, down their throats doesn't hurt, they're just in denial. That's why I don't like the whole'catch and release' fishing thing as a sport. I think it's cruel. It's certainly not sport for the fish, it's torture.

9. omg -- same with our koi!

they definitely had personalities and were very interested in what goes on outside of the water.

the last time i fished was years ago. we were in the Keys for a week and I brought some fishing gear my FIL gave me. it was night and i thought it would be relaxing to sit on the dock and cast a few lines (i had not fished since being a kid). I caught a Mangrove Snapper right away...pulled her out of the water and she was glowing with iridescent colors. just amazing. and i immediately felt like such an ass for taking her from her place. i carefully removed the hook and got her gently back in the water. haven't fished since.

it's nearly lobster season down there. i can't be around that. i love to dive and hang out with the lobsters under the docks in the lower keys. they're amazingly beautiful. it kills me to see the lobster season pics people post where they've hoarded 50, 60 and more of them -- more than anyone can possibly consume. it's just grotesque.

again, it was an epiphany i had prepping a lobster for dinner one night. I was washing it in the sink and really got a look at its colors and intricate "design," if you will. i felt like i was breaking a stained glass window in a church.
