"... the First Lady was captured recently texting during the Pledge of Allegiance."

Ummm, no she wasn't.

A frequent writer of LTTE had this one last week. I see her at the library from time to time. If I'm in the right mood, I'll bring up the Snopes article and aim the monitor in her direction.

Letter: A Matter Of Respect

Letter: A Matter Of Respect
Letter to the Editor

Alexandria — To the Editor:

Even as we debate how to honor our Southern/American heritage of 150-plus years ago, today we should all take pride in being Americans. Among other ways, we show that we do so by saluting our flag and being active participants in the Pledge of Allegiance and other appropriate ceremonies. When I was a teacher at T.C. Williams, students who refused to salute the flag and recite the Pledge were required to show respect by being silent and not interfering with those who wished to do so. They were not permitted to perform other tasks.

However, the First Lady was captured recently texting during the Pledge of Allegiance. She owes us all an apology for this egregious display of disrespect. In particular, I recommend that she begin by calling the families of the recently murdered service members in Chattanooga to offer her sympathy and thank them for volunteering to defend our freedoms. Even better, she should also visit them and hear first-hand about the costs of protecting our country.

But:

Correspondents' Course

Shortly after the 2015 dinner, an image was circulated online with the claim that it showed First Lady Michelle Obama looking down at her phone and texting while all the other guests around her were standing at attention with their hands over their hearts, presumably during the Presentation of the Colors that opened the program — thus providing yet another vivid example of Michelle Obama's supposed disdain of all things American and patriotic:

However rude or unpatriotic the attendee pictured here might have been, though, she clearly wasn't Michelle Obama. The First Lady is not seated with the general audience at the Correspondents' Dinner; she sits at head table on the dais. Moreover, as photographs of the 2015 event clearly documents, Mrs. Obama was wearing a very different gown and hairstyle on that occasion from the woman shown above:

{snip}

Wait - it wasn't Michelle, and it wasn't the Pledge of Allegiance:

Woman Texting During National Anthem At White House Correspondents Dinner Outrages America

I've already overdosed on outrage for the week. Someone view this, please. Thanks.

UPDATE: The woman on her phone was Washington Post writer Helena Andrews. She responded on Twitter that she “was taking notes. On my phone. Because it’s 2015.”

As a reporter, she was working at the time.

pointing out the falsehood, and chastise the editors of the paper for being gullible enough to print such garbage.

I'll bring up the Snopes site and see to it that she is made aware of the facts.

Now, whether she believes Snopes or an email that starts out "FWD:Re:fwd:RE:RE:Fwd: SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!11!1!11," I cannot say.

I don't live where that paper is, so I'm not going to write regarding a letter I didn't see for myself.

After all, isn't it true that all black people look alike?

Or is that all Asians?

I know for sure all white people are very unique, for I am one of them.

I hope that clears things up.
