who killed Cecil, the Lion?
I have never been an eye for an eye kind of person. But I have to admit that recently, some of
the things that people are doing--and thinking they are ok--just horrify me. I have known for years
that there are hunters who really get their jollies at killing magnificent animals, cutting off their heads,
and then displaying them on the walls of their homes. We lived next door to a guy like that in Lincoln, NE.
When he built a new house out in the country--and moved, giving the house next door to his daughter and
her family--we were invited to a house warming. I could not believe all the trophy animal heads--many from Africa-- on the guy's walls. It made me sick to my stomach and I had to have my husband take me home.
So, I've met this kind of person. Seen his home. This guy is a really sick person.
In my fantasy, this dentist is driven out on the veld, given his bow and arrow, and then he becomes the object
of the hunt. Or, maybe, one hopes there are some cannibals around?
Anybody else have some fantasies for how this guy should be treated?

(14,255 posts)he knew it was Cecil. Unfortunately, it looks like this is one of the few ways to make money, for the guides.
Edited - I take it back, I think he knew damned right well it was a protected lion. Guides completely complicit.

(31,392 posts)But that is what is so wrong with the world if these killings are the only way for guides to make
money while the US and other countries spend billions of dollars every year maintaining nuclear arsenals.
We have become a world consumed with killing.
It makes me sick.

And he's also been caught and fined for fishing without a license.
And now, the coup de grace, it comes out that his malpractice insurance co. had to pay out $127K for sexual harassment of a former employee and patient, for inappropriate comments about and touching of breasts and buttocks.

(10,650 posts)because of that he was forced to live with his one true fan, Ted Nugent. After they get to know each other really well, they decide the other needs to die and it would be best if they hunted each other on Ted's ranch. Death match for the ultimate trophy!
Or the guy gets 5-10 years in a Zimbabwean prison...

(19,288 posts)And there is a psychological term, that is unconscious, when we hate what someone has done, yet advocate some sort of the same violent or criminal conduct, that we proclaimed to abhore be executed on another being.
I'll have to Google defense mechanisms I don't remember the name. It's not a good coping skill and if you do advocate violence towards the mighty hunter you might be on thin ice here.

If found guilty, he will face a $5000 fine. Not a significant deterrent, I would guess.

(12,655 posts)because the $5000 fine isn't going to do shit. He paid over 50,000 for the pleasure of killing this poor creature. This needs to hit him where it hurts.

(29,047 posts)I think the justice system should be used for protection, as opposed to punishment. Punishing him won't fix the harm, but removing his ability to poach, such as taking away his weapons and passport, will likely prevent future poaching. Of course he would view this as a punishment, since he is being harmed, but the goal is just to protect wildlife from his violent hobby.
Some people believe punishment makes other potential criminals less likely to commit crimes, and perhaps this is true in some cases, but the US locks up more people than any other country, and yet we still have tons and tons of crime.
darkangel218
(13,985 posts)And I'm completely fine with that.
ZombieHorde
(29,047 posts)so I can sympathize with the desire for revenge. Sometimes violence seems very pleasurable. The poacher certainly loves violence.

(31,392 posts)I can't get over the fact this guy couldn't find anything better to do with $50 grand, plus his travel
expenses, than to hunt down and kill a magnificent lion. It must mean he has PLENTY of money
and it would only be right for him to have to volunteer his time and skills to preserve life
and health of other magnificent animals.

(36,444 posts)(CNN)An American man is being sought in connection with a case that has drawn international attention -- the killing of Cecil the lion -- Zimbabwean officials said Tuesday.
The man suspected in Cecil's death is Walter James Palmer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, according to Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.
Cecil, who was 13, was a prized lion in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, where visitors reportedly sighted him frequently. A video of the animal, regal, indifferent and sleepy-eyed, has been widely disseminated.
He was a participant in a study that Oxford University in Britain was conducting, and he had been outfitted with a GPS collar.
A police official in Zimbabwe said that two Zimbabweans had been arrested in the case and that police were looking for Palmer.
