Jefferson Davis statue removed from boulevard’s utility box (LA)

... The utility box at the intersection of South Jefferson Davis Parkway and Canal Street had previously been painted with the Jefferson Davis statue on two sides. The painted utility boxes around the city are a part of a project called The New Orleans Street Gallery started by Community Visions Unlimited, a non-profit that aims to rebuild neighborhoods through beautification.

Jeannie Tidy, vice president and founder of the organization, said that the box at Jefferson Davis and Canal Street was repainted due to “several complaints.”

“We had several complaints about the Jeff Davis statue on two of the sides so we had the artist go back and add something that is not controversial,” Tidy said. “CVU wants to be a catalyst for good in all neighborhoods.”

The utility box is now painted with a butterfly and sunflower on the sides ...
