ego

I had a very good friend. In fact he was a member here. He was an exceptionally kind, funny, intelligent, ethical person and accepted no bullshit from anyone. He also had a massive ego and - especially toward the end of his life - needed it to be nourished. Just in small ways, but he need it intensely and regularly.

Sometimes it irritated me but I never really begrudged him for the need or the way he "requested" - often by announcing he was taking a break from here.

Most people are complex and have good and bad elements to their personalities. Especially the intelligent, creative ones. It seems to me if the balance between what they contribute and what mistakes they make tips in favor of the contributions, we should maybe be a little more forgiving of their fuck-ups.

odds are that you've never enjoyed your time with them or really interacted with them.
