Huckabee: The Jewish response has been ‘overwhelmingly positive’

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says if he was president, he would use the same language when referring to potential deals with Iran — and that the response from Jewish people to his controversial comments has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“We need to use strong words when people make strong threats against an entire group of people as the Iranians have made toward the Jews,” the former Arkansas governor said Tuesday in an interview with Matt Lauer.

Huckabee said he has received nothing but positive feedback from the group of people he supposedly has offended.

“The response from Jewish people have been overwhelming positive,” he said, adding that he has even heard from Holocaust survivors and their children. He noted that at an event he attended Monday night, “I was probably one of four gentiles in the entire event — it was a Jewish event. People were overwhelmingly supportive.”

Jewish groups react to Mike Huckabee’s ‘oven’ remarks

Jewish groups across the country reacted to Mike Huckabee’s comments, in which the GOP presidential candidate this weekend likened the Iran deal to the Holocaust, with one organization saying the remarks “may be the most inexcusable we’ve encountered in recent memory.”

...

The National Jewish Democratic Council immediately called on members of the Republican Party to denounce Huckabee’s comments, saying it is “not only disgustingly offensive to the President and the White House, but shows utter, callous disregard for the millions of lives lost in the Shoah and to the pain still felt by their descendants today.”

...

The Anti-Defamation League, a group that fights antisemitism, said that while they are wary of the deal, Huckabee’s comments are “completely out of line and unacceptable.”

“To hear Mr. Huckabee invoke the Holocaust when America is Israel’s greatest ally and when Israel is a strong nation capable of defending itself is disheartening,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, in a statement.

(oh look, I found ONE!)

President of the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation, Jerry Klinger, told msnbc that “if you take a historic view on Huckabee’s comments, he’s right.”

Acknowledging the former governor’s close ties with Netanyahu, Klinger said “why should this be different when you have your neighbor threatening to exterminate and kill you.”

Huckabee's gas chamber reference to Iran deal draws Israeli criticism

JERUSALEM | BY JEFFREY HELLER

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee drew rare criticism from Israel on Tuesday for comments in which he accused President Barack Obama of marching Israelis "to the door of the oven" in a nuclear deal with Iran.

Israeli Transport Minister Yisrael Katz said on Facebook the former Arkansas governor was "genuinely concerned" about Israel's future but was wrong to refer to Nazi gas chambers that killed millions of Jews in voicing alarm over the July 14 accord between world powers and Iran.

Israel has called the agreement a threat to its survival and has urged U.S. lawmakers to reject the deal, saying it would give Iran a "sure path" to nuclear weapons.

"Dear Mr Huckabee, no one is marching Jews to the ovens anymore," Katz, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party, wrote.

"That is why we established the State of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces, and if necessary, we will know how to defend ourselves by ourselves," Katz said.
