I've been monitoring DU as always I just haven't been posting or replying. It's going to be okay. I'll be back next week. I'm still reading your posts (you are still cared for) so your audience is still receptive of your opinions and insights.
Full disclosure - I am posting as the sun rises on NORTH Myrtle Beach South Carolina sitting on the finely swept sands outside the condo my family got comped from a corporate connection. They only did 3 passes with the sand sweeper this morning - this will need to be fixed in the coming days. Hell, I had to carry own chair AND coffee down here. Yes DU, I feel your collective groans for my plight. I feel you DU even when I am not with you.
You are probably thinking "Well you can still keep DU together!!!" True. I'm leaving my phone upstairs and reading "Havana Nocturne" about how the mafia and their government/corporate stooges failed to prevent the rise of Castro. The population, with a history of rebellion, grew tired of merely being the servant class to the vacationing tourists who reaped the native environment for their own fleeting amusement.
Yes the irony of my situation is palpable but then so is the fact that I take a week off from DU and many feel life is no longer worth it (here on DU of course). Relax everyone. I'll be back next week.
"History will absolve me" as someone once said in a famous speech.
All is well. Remain calm.

(182,826 posts)The condo is comped. I've found that the locals will collect shells for you in exchange for coupons to many local bargain beach ware/pancake houses/ golf shoe outlets. I feel it is good for them - they can sell or barter the goods for other needed items. Not sure how that works with pancakes but hey I don't want to meddle in their personal lives ...plus I have powers that need to be conveyed in broader means.

(22,651 posts)I've never, ever got the "big, best free stuff", private Jet to Dubai for a week at the 5 stars. Have fun, buy some shells from the locals

(12,157 posts)When you get back let us know who much fun you had. My question is, how's the water? I went into the water at Ocean City, MD and off of Assateague Island, VA and I couldn't take it. I grew up swimming in the tepid waters of the Gulf of Mexico. I know I'm a wuss. So I limited my water time to surf fishing for Blues and rock fish.

(182,826 posts)Actually saw a shark about ten feet off shore yesterday morning. An hour later everyone, many who were probably unaware of it, we're back splashing around in the waves. I sat on the beach observing, hoping for a Roman Colliseum event but alas no.

(12,157 posts)While you're having fun on the beach, I'm getting ready for a bike ride before Texas turns up the heat. There's a small window between too dark and too hot.

(22,651 posts)have a nice bike ride, wear something to keep the killer sunshine off you
TexasProgresive
(12,157 posts)That's another reason I like to ride in the early morning, the slanted morning or evening sun is not so harmful. I had a good ride of 12.6 miles. I usually see some neat critters or other natural wonders but this morning was mostly just good clean air. I only had 2 vehicles pass me so I wasn't breathing a lot of noxious fumes. One thing of note one of those was a TexDPS car. It wasn't running hot but we don't see those often on our county roads. The nosy in me would like to know if something is going on

(22,651 posts)Sometimes at a high rate of speed (no lights) just so they can cover all any cars on their country roads 'street beat'
They can run the plates, scan the stickers while they drive and maybe hit a 'daily jackpot' and get a "lucky traffic stop".
It's actually really nice outside before the sun rises. But out on dark country roads to many slow opossums, skunks and low flying bats to ride a bike through safely.

(31,392 posts)Are you going to tempt the sharks? My husband went in the ocean twice--no shark bites.
My son's friend was walking in a tide pool and was attacked by a crab! He lifted his
foot up to see only the claw hanging off his little toe! So...beware the claws!
