Donald Trump isn't actually running for President.

http://www.salon.com/2015/07/28/donald_trump_is_a_coward_why_the_rich_luxurious_poseur_has_never_had_the_guts_to_really_run_for_president_partner/

The reasoning is simple:

- If he loses in the primaries, he's a loser.

- If he wins the primaries but loses the election, he's not only a loser but the guy whose megalomania cost the GOP a national election.

- If he wins the election, he will have to work in a partisan environment with people he can't push and bully, with people who don't care that he's a billionaire, with people who don't care about his bluster and grandstanding. And he would have to get something done while being held responsible for whatever outcome for the rest of his life.

Trump will find an excuse to leave the race before the voters themselves get to judge him. (He's the greatest guy in the world! He judges others! Nobody gets to judge HIM!)

Just like they made Perot drop out, but when they found out that more Clinton voters were voting for Perot, the shadow government had Perot get back in the race.
Trump will drop out of the race and he will give a stupid reason just like Perot did, because they can't tell the real reason they dropped out.

I kind of thought the same thing. When he said he doesn't like McCain anymore because he lost the election, and he doesn't like losers, I thought...well, how are you going to feel about yourself when you lose the election? Will you be able to face the public, or anyone else for that matter?

can't use his run as publicity for his brand or for ratings for his show or his beauty pageant, there is no reason to drop out, since he believes he can't lose, and his soaring popularity among the RW base creates a bubble by reinforcing that belief. He is high on the RW adulation.

His plan is to anoint the nominee, likely Ted Cruz. Ted is the only one who has consistently kissed up to him. Most of the others have disqualified themselves by saying mean things about the Donald. Trump will have some fanciful reason for dropping out and will bequeath his supporters to his chosen buttboy.
He wants to be the kingmaker. It is a gigantic ego trip. He wants no part of the presidency.

and he's number one in many polls. While he probably was just goofing off on the beginning, it's probably hitting him now that he might actually have a once in a lifetime shot at the presidency. He's probably reflecting on his life and figures this is a great way to cement his legacy. Not to mention, he's been fired or dropped from all his other jobs/ revenue streams. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

he can avoid that label by dropping out of contention for the GOP nomination and running as a third-party candidate. Of course he knows third-party candidates can't win, but he also knows they can be spoilers. He can suck up enough teabagger and nativist votes to hand the election to the Democrats, and then he can sit back and say to the GOPers, "See, you should have nominated ME!" He will also get more publicity than ever. It's a total win for him.

The reason he polls so highly among GOP voters is because they're bored by the straight pols. This is their way of messaging their party that they hate the status quo.
