Tears and anger at funeral of 'police chokehold victim' Jonathan Sanders

‘We have a bad history with the police here … Believe and trust me: we have a problem here’ says mourner at service for Mississippi African American man. Mourners packed into a church here on Saturday morning, to grieve the loss of Jonathan Sanders and to grapple with the circumstances of his death.

“Everything’s fucked up right now. My kids are scared to death,” he said. “That cop didn’t look dangerous either. He’s supposed to protect and serve. And look what happened.”

According to the Sanders family’s attorneys, witnesses to his death give a unified account of what happened that night. At about 10pm Sanders took his horse, Diva, out for exercise. It’s common here to wait until the heat of the day has dissipated before taking horses out.

Riding in a buggy drawn by the horse and wearing a headlamp on his forehead, witnesses say, Sanders passed a fuel station where a Stonewall policeman, Herrington, was talking to another man. From his buggy, Sanders told the officer to leave the man alone, before continuing on his way.

According to Sanders family attorneys, Herrington said: “I’m going to get that nigger.” He then followed Sanders.

A witness told the attorneys that after Sanders left, Herrington allegedly said, "I'm gonna get that n****r."

Lawrence said multiple eyewitnesses have told the attorneys that Herrington then got in his car with an unidentified civilian female and drove after Sanders, who was on his buggy. Three eyewitnesses who are related to Sanders by marriage, and who say they saw the altercation from their home, said the officer turned on his police lights when he was just behind Sanders. The lights startled the horse, which took off at a sprint, throwing Sanders off his buggy.

"Jonathan immediately began to run after his horse, unaware of what was going on behind him," Lawrence said. "Herrington proceeded to chase Jonathan."

Herrington allegedly grabbed a headlight tied around Sanders' head, pulling it down to his neck and yanking him to the ground. Sanders' body was slumped down in a "praying position" as Herrington allegedly wrapped his arms around the man's neck, placing him a chokehold, Lawrence said.
