Gary Plauche will be remembered by many Americans as the Baton Rouge father who fatally shot his sons alleged molester, a karate instructor, at the Metro Airport in 1984 a killing caught on camera that produced national headlines even recently because of the vigilante nature of his actions.
Plauches family members, however, while unable to escape or ignore the historic killing, will remember the man who died Tuesday as a kind, fun and loving family man a husband, father and grandfather who relished cracking open crawfish shells and beer cans almost as much as he enjoyed cracking jokes.
Plauche, who had been dealing with lingering complications from a series of strokes he suffered several years ago, died early Tuesday morning at a Baton Rouge nursing home. He was 68.
A lot of people remember the guy who shot somebody, Gary Plauches son, Jody Plauche, said. I remember someone who would pick up stray animals ... someone who was just a kind soul, a gentle person.

(11,936 posts)That kind of killing isn't in cold blood because considering what the molester had done, the blood remains hot for quite awhile. Myself, if I had children and someone had molested them, I would probably settle for beating the shit out of the molester before going to jail for assault... but I still understand that level of anger.

(5,455 posts)I hope I never end up on a case like this, I hope even more that I never find myself in a similar situation.
Emotionally I side with the father even though he probably should not have taken the law into his own hands. I doubt I would have voted for a guilty plea if I was a juror on such a case.
