NY Magazine Puts Cosby Accusers on Cover (Powerful cover image included)

New York magazine published this week's cover on Sunday featuring 35 women who have accused Bill Cosby of rape or sexual assault. All 35 women were interviewed separately over the past six months for the explosive photo essay, which provides comprehensive accounts of their trauma and signals a shift in public perception of Cosby's accusers. "I think his legacy is going to be similar to OJ's legacy," Joan Tarshis, one of Cosby’s accusers, said. "When you hear OJ Simpson's name, you don’t think: 'Oh, great football player.' That doesn’t come to mind first. I'm thinking it’s not going to be: 'Oh, great comedian.' It’s going to be, 'Oh, serial rapist.' And that will be our legacy." More than 50 women have so far accused the embattled comedian of sexual assault.

A publication that wasn't afraid to write about this dirtbag and not be a rape apologist. Amazing since we were assured the only journalistic standard was averring that a rapist was not a criminal in lieu of a trial.

From the tone of the statements there are a large number of victims who have still not come forward. With the current number of victims, this would be an average of one per year.

Heaven - and Cosby - know the real numbers.

I'm actually encouraged by how most people today are both believing these women and utterly sickened by Cosby. He used to be a beloved and widely respected entertainer and now he is widely loathed. He will never be remembered for being anything but a rapist. He still has diehard supporters, but they are dwarfed by people outraged by what he has done.

Hopefully, times are changing. No one should ever feel they have to keep silent about being raped or abused. And no one should be denied justice either.

There was a culture of sex that went on during the 70s where women were very actively seeking out famous men and the men were not trying that hard to push them away. Some of these men are in the bands of the music that I listen to today. Some of them are in the concerts I have tickets to go see even next month.

I have to wonder how many other stories are out there like this just waiting to boil over and be heard. None of these famous men were saints back then during the 70s and some of these girls were even underage. But I think the thing about Cosby that stands out the most are 2 things. First was his judgemental way that he has preached towards other men and their behavior. I remember Cosby and his 'I'm such a great family man' attitude during the Cosby years and how he would be critical towards other African-American men and their behavior. Looking back I realize that Cosby's behavoir was way worse.

As for other male celebrities around the same age as Cosby I have to consider this. Cosby was drugging these women to the point that they were unable to stop Cosby's advances against them and there was a very serious pattern of sexual assault and rape that went on for decades. I would like to think (or perhaps hope) that at least during their heydey of sexual adventure that these other male celebrities at least stuck with women who were at least willing participants. And I would hope that those who were not have the bravery to step forward like the Cosby women were willing to do. It's never too late.

Tons of young women were eager to hang around backstage, hoping to catch the eye of the big stars, and would willingly bed them in exchange for the associated glory and esteem. The key word being 'willing', or course.

That Cosby, who could have had any number of willing women jump into bed with him, could resort to what he did is just sickening. And mind-boggling and downright evil, too. I saw Cosby's accusers labeled as gold-diggers, star fuckers, and tramps right here on DU. Funny, now that it's pretty much proven that he's a sick evil bastard, I don't hear those posters speaking up anymore.

And I think the better stars are a bit more picky to ensure the girls in question are at least of legal age and at least somewhat of sober mind in their decision making.

I know this much, I wasn't one to judge, I know back when I was 15 there was at least almost an attempt I was going to make to get back stage. Of course the concert never happened since the one band member died and the band ceased to exist from that moment on forever more. I think after that I kinda grew out of the idea of doing anything crazy like that but the girls (and even some guys) who did that were in no ways gold-digger, star fuckers. At least with the rock bands it really was about the music and the love of it. Even today I am in such awe of musicians, I think in a former life I was a musician in some form.

But it is one thing if a famous person sleeps with a willing groupie but another for someone to drug these people to practical unconsciousness over and over again. I would have to think that if other celebrities were doing this that more women would come forward.

Some woman who wants to "get" a rich guy is one thing. A woman meeting with someone for a discussion of work and ending up drugged and raped is definitely NOT consensual.
I just dont get why he did it. As you point out, he was a famous guy who could get a woman willingly WITHOUT drugging them. There MUST be some mental issue here.

New York Times:

On Sunday evening, New York magazine posted a stark, black-and-white cover of its latest issue, featuring 35 women who have accused the comedian Bill Cosby of sexual abuse. Hours later, the magazine’s website went offline, and the article was inaccessible on Monday morning...

Around noon on Monday, the site was back online.

...(O)n Twitter, a user who goes by Vikingdom2016 claimed responsibility for an attack on the site. The goal of this attack, also referred to as denial-of-service attack, is to shut down a website under a flood of traffic. In an interview with the website Daily Dot, the hacker, also known as ThreatKing, said the attack was based on a hatred for New York, and was not related to the cover that features Mr. Cosby’s accusers. “I have not even seen the cover, LOL,” he told the website over Skype on Monday.

And with that, the voices of women who had refrained from going public with their accusations against Mr. Cosby were again interrupted...

Well, the cover photo won't be getting "disappeared" anymore -- a copy has been granted asylum on my server!

I know this is about Bill Cosby raping adult (or near adult) women but when I see that list of people I can't help but compare him to Jimmy Savile. He only "got off" because he died. Others who are alive are getting tried and convicted - even when the crime was in the 1970's. I think a part of it is that for rape in some states there is a statute of limitations on the books - after X years somone can't get prosecuted for their crimes.

It may be justice late, but remove these statutes of limitations and send him to court to be tried.

38. One Extraordinary Magazine Cover Could Finally End Bill Cosby’s Public Relations Offensive
Tue Jul 28, 2015, 02:33 AM
Jul 2015

As evidence has continued to mount suggesting that Bill Cosby is a serial rapist, his lawyers and other representatives have continued to defend him. Even the recent release of a deposition — in which he admitted to giving women drugs to facilitate having sex with them — did not slow down the effort.

Cosby “admitted to nothing more than being one of the many people who introduced Quaaludes into their consensual sex life in the 1970s,” his lawyers argued in a document filed last week.

But one striking magazine cover could finally put an end to it all. Over a six month period, New York Magazine interviewed and photograhed 35 women who allege that Bill Cosby sexually assaulted them. They all appear on the cover of the latest issue — along with an empty chair, which perhaps represents other women who have not yet spoken publicly:

The picture of the women on the cover is an extraordinarily powerful rebuttal to Cosby’s public relations campaign. (The response to the story has been so great that it has crashed the servers nymag.com for hours.) The group “ranges in age from early 20s to 80 and includes supermodels Beverly Johnson and Janice Dickinson alongside waitresses and Playboy bunnies and journalists.” According to New York Magazine, many of the women say they know of other women assaulted by Cosby who have not yet gone public.

just as Sandusky's wife must have known.

NAME: Carla Ferrigno

OCCUPATION: former Playboy bunny

ALLEGED ASSAULT: 1967

Ferrigno met a man at Los Angeles International Airport who asked her out to dinner. She went, and before the date was over, the man mentioned that he and Cosby were good friends. He asked Ferrigno if she wanted to go to Cosby’s house with him that night. She drove with her date to Cosby’s Beverly Hills home, where she met the comedian and his wife, Camille. They went to a movie, Cosby sitting next to her. After the movie, the group went back to Cosby’s house to play pool. Cosby offered Ferrigno a cocktail. She refused it. They continued their pool game, but soon Ferrigno realized that Camille had left the room. Ferrigno’s date disappeared next, just as they finished up their game <emphasis added>. She asked Cosby where the man had gone. He brushed off her question. Ferrigno went to put the cue back when Cosby rushed her. He gripped her and kissed her. Ferrigno sprinted out of the room. “I never spoke to anyone again about this,” she says. She opened up about the incident publicly in November 2014.

“In 2005, I heard on the radio a woman who was crying and talking about how she was molested by Bill Cosby. I listened to it. That was when I said to myself, ‘This was a setup. This is a setup.’ I never thought of this before. That guy must have been like a pimp for him.”

But this? If there is anything to be gained from this, I hope these women find solidarity with one another knowing that he tricked and raped many other women.
