Just because they deny it, doesn't make it not so. Just because it's bad, doesn't make it not so. That's people wearing costumes to play a character. Just because the character is from their imagination and not a movie, comic book or video game doesn't make it not cosplay.

Civilian guarding military recruitment center accidentally fired his gun while showing it off

by USMC Life
AR-15

Lancaster police confiscated Christopher Reed’s AR-15 after he accidentally shot it in front of a military recruiting center.

LANCASTER, OH: Many military leaders seemed like they knew this would happen. A armed man stepped up, volunteering to guard a U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Center on Thursday. He fired a shot accidentally from his weapon just after noon, according to Lancaster police.

<SNIP>

Reed stated in an interview with the paper, “I was out here and was talking to a guy who wanted to look at my AR-15. “I was trying to clear the weapon and hand it over to him when it went off. I thought it was empty and must have missed it.”

The article also stated he was pointing the weapon at the ground when the shot was fired, and according to the police report, the only damage done was a hole in the pavement.

“Listen, it was a mistake. No one was injured and I owned up to it immediately with the police,” Reed said. “I’m glad no one was hurt. I am willing to take the punishment”, the newspaper reported.

Talk about literally trying to "wrap yourself in the flag"....

This is from a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report on the "The United States Flag: Federal Law Relating to Display and Associated Questions" published in 2008. It covers both custom and law with references and analysis.

Pg CRS13-14
Use of the Flag in Jewelry, Commercial Products, Wearing Apparel, and Advertising

The Flag Code addresses the impropriety of using the flag as an article of personal adornment, a design on items of temporary use, and item of clothing.48 The evident purpose of these suggested restraints is to limit the commercial or common usage of the flag and, thus, maintain its dignity. The 1976 amendments to the Code recognized the wearing of a flag patch or pin on the left side (near the heart) of uniforms of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.49 The Code also states that the flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.50
While wearing the colors may be in poor taste and offensive to many, it is important to remember that the Flag Code is intended as a guide to be followed on a purely voluntary basis to insure proper respect for the flag. It is, at least, questionable whether statutes placing civil or criminal penalties on the wearing of clothing bearing or resembling a flag could be constitutionally enforced in light of Supreme Court decisions in the area of flag desecration.51
In the past, the Supreme Court has held that states may restrict use of pictures of the flag on commercial products.52 There is a federal criminal prohibition on the use of the flag for advertising purposes in the District of Columbia.53 While commercial speech does not receive the full protection of the First Amendment,54 the status of these statutes and cases can not be taken for granted in light of Eichman and Johnson.

http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30243.pdf

Their view of patriotism is one I have never and will comprehend. I think we need to mandate universal service, if only for the basic civics lessons that go along with it.

And it depends on how they put the ballot together whether I can vote in (what was previously) my local jurisdiction or just for statewide/federal offices.

However, my last US address was Texas, and given the preponderance of left-of-center voters among expatriates, I'm far from sure that the election board doesn't just shred my absentee ballot.

Or open it, read it, and then bin it.

I keep sending 'em in, though — I haven't missed an election in the last 40 years, even though I've been out of the country for two-thirds of that time.
