Colin Cowherd is a racist ass

Major League Baseball on Friday said ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd owes Dominican players an apology for on-air remarks made a day earlier concerning Dominicans and their intelligence related to baseball.

In a statement, MLB said it "condemns the remarks made by Colin Cowherd, which were inappropriate, offensive and completely inconsistent with the values of our game" and that he "owes our players of Dominican origin, and Dominican people generally, an apology."

The flap stems from Cowherd's comments on Thursday, which were made while debating whether it was difficult for a front-office executive to take over managerial duties -- using current Miami Marlins general manager/manager Dan Jennings as an example.

"It's baseball," Cowherd said Thursday. "You don't think a general manager can manage? Like it's impossible? The game is too complex? I've never bought into that, 'Baseball's just too complex.' Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has not been known in my lifetime as having world-class academic abilities. A lot of those kids come from rough backgrounds and have not had opportunities academically that other kids from other countries have.

So he is both denigrating a whole nation and the game of baseball as well. Ass.

ESPN essentially fired him a few days ago by not renewing his contract. He's joining up with Fox Sports.

Got in the car to go home and heard that he was fired.

Jim Rome thought he was making a big leap to TV and staying on radio but he has virtually disappeared from the scene. He is probably still doing great financially but if you leave a source of publicity the consumers of that source no longer hear about you. Jay Mohr is much better anyway in my opinion.

Fox and NBC and CBS suits are just SURE they can cut into the ESPN market. Nope, hate to say it but sports fans turn on ESPN to get their highlights. They are like Ma Bell used to be. We are creatures of comfort and routine.

According to UNICEF

Statistics:

In a 2008 study of academic achievement for 3rd and 6th grade students in 16 Latin American countries, the Dominican Republic came in dead last in the areas of math, reading and science.
Dominican Republic Preschool Enrollment is around 32%.
The Dominican Republic’s public investment in education is 2.3% of their gross domestic product, which ranks 122nd out of 132 countries.
Around 85% of poor Dominican parents have never completed primary education.
For every 100 Dominican children entering formal education, only 75 complete grade 4; 63 complete grade 6 and only 52 complete the 8-year primary level. This situation is even worse in rural areas where most schools stop at grade 5.
The Dominican Republic was ranked 101 out of 177 countries in terms of literacy.

So okay they might not have the same opportunity. The comment "having world-class academic abilities" doesn't seem to flow from that information, thou. Either they don't have the ability to perform well or they don't have the opportunity. He seems to be arguing both or more to the point arguing for the sake of arguing both sides to make a point that baseball is somehow a stupid sport filled with dumbies while football is a smart sport. Even though we know the NFL is filled with people like Dexter Manley who played, was an all pro, and never learned to read during his playing days. But he apparently understood all those hard X and O s on a board that Cowherd think are impossible for you at home to understand. I guess it doesn't matter as he's phoning it in and getting great FOX press. He'll fit right in over in the network filled with blowhards.

6. Nutrition

Not the only reason for the stats you gave but that whole island is horribly malnourished. That affects brain development hugely. DR players lie about their age, or did, because baseball teams know it takes 2-4 years to get them properly nourished and strengthened to play a season of MLB.

I happen to have a REALLY smart kid. Off the charts in every score etc. not bragging. I know full well that it's because the second we found out we were pregnant my wife tossed the crap in the fridge and we ate super healthy for 5 years. Organic, went to farms to buy are meats, not even veggies out a can. THAT was what did the deal I have zero doubt. Trust me, it wasn't the gene pool she managed to crawl out of.

On edit - I misspelled nutrition

Lol... maybe a couple roided out sluggers on a team, and even that is going away due to consequences. Have you ever seen pictures of some of the best pitchers in baseball? One example of many... Greg Maddux a meathead? You be the judge

It was just a matter of time. Fox is definitely the place for him. And in terms of complexity, baseball looks like rocket science, compared to sports commentary.....

he's not a racist. Just the opposite. he's very progressive on race issues. And his outspokenness on race issues and his advocacy of progressive takes on issues is even more significant given his audience, which tends to skew white, male and conservative.

What he said was insensitive, certainly, and a mistake. But it doesn't define his character.

Rome, like Cowherd, tends to be pretty progressive. Which as you mention is no mean feat in the demographic that they must play to. It also helps put the lie to the meme station owners use for inundating the airwaves with right wing talk.

Jim Rome makes upwards of $30million/year and Colin Cowherd just signed with Fox for $6million/year. So hosts with liberal leanings can and do succeed.

All that being said .. I find that less is more in listening to either one of them. Much of that is just the nature of sports talk radio. Although there are a few like Dan Patrick that I can take in a little larger doses.
