General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs everyone enjoying Donald Trump as much as I am?
The morning news on my favorite cable network has become real entertainment. I don't ever remember enjoying the antics of someone with an ego the size of Manhattan. It's amazing to watch the other 15 Republicans candidates squirm as he dominates the airways, stealing supporters from just about everyone and causing "establishment" candidates to fret about the damage Trump is doing to their party. The very thought of Trump as a possible third party candidate causes their blood to freeze. My only concern is that Trump will say something that will turn off his most ardent supporters.
However, the Donald, who is not only leading in the polls, but almost doubling Jeb Bush in support, is simply exposing the ugly underbelly of the GOP - its radical far right base. The tea party zealots, religious fundamentalists, and racists are sick and tired of "moderate" Republicans who pander to them with slick rhetoric in the primaries than pivot to the center in order to broaden their appeal for the general election.
The Republican Partys problem is not Donald Trump, it is the people who make up the beating heart of that party.

The more I see and hear about him, the
worse I feel about what America has become
that there actually are people who would
support this seriously disturbed individual who
is trying to get elected to the highest office
in our country.
I want to cry.

(870 posts)Trump has figured out how to turn a serious political race into reality tv and people are eating it up and enjoying it. It scares lhe living shit outta me. The 2016 election, that will decide who runs the country and shapes policy for most fo the world has become american idol and brings me close to tears.

(14,947 posts)It is absolutely shameful. It's the fact that his poll numbers are rising that really upsets me. We are becoming a nation of clowns and I am embarrassed. Proud to be an American? Not lately.

(7,499 posts)It's disturbing that so many people embrace his hatred, intolerance and total ignorance of world affairs and diplomacy. Trump is an egotistical blow hard with little grasp of politics or the responsibilities of the presidency. I am stunned that so many like this dolt, and at this time, would trust him to hold the most powerful position in the world.

(5,648 posts)The right wing radicals that are bolstering Trump's poll numbers have always been there; let's not pretend that we didn't know they existed. Republican politicians have for years been pandering to them using politically correct terms (like when Southern politicians used to talk about "states' rights" as code to say they supported racism) while at the same time pretending that they aren't there.
Trump's poll number merely merely spotlight the raw underbelly of the GOP which doesn't exposed often enough.

(3,586 posts)I haven't watched the evening network news regularly in a long time, but I've happened to have my local NBC affiliate on when the news begins the last several days. Trump is the lead story every single day. Chuck Todd is right in saying that no other Repubs can get a message out, b/c Trump is taking up all the air time.
If he doesn't get the nomination and runs as an independent, the Republicans are toast.

Once he gets on a roll, he's gonna dominate that stage and start insulting everyone else.

(4,462 posts)... but there is a game plan. Trump will eventually withdraw. He doesn't really want the job because it's hard and requires work. He just wants to get in front of microphones and bloviate.
But in the meantime, his insanity will help make one of the other "serious" candidates look reasonable by comparison. That might be a good strategy for them if they can keep it from getting TOO out of control. Of course, that's what I'm hoping for. It wouldn't be the first time their strategists created a monster that got away from them.
But I can't deny enjoying the show.

(10,044 posts). . . I wondered how we'd survive the long months till Election 2016, but we've been given a gift in the never-ending sanctimonious comments of the right and the Mouth that arouses them. Today anyway, till something really upsets me, I say "Go Donald."
I wonder how many other phone numbers he has. He could really do a lot of mischief if everyone in DC has to change their phone numbers at the same time...if they haven't already

(5,648 posts)According to a recent Gallop poll only 25% of the voting population identify as Republicans, while 16% say they are independent but lean to the Republican Party. Combined that is 41% of the voting population.
Of that number, the polls which show Trump ahead for the Republican nomination show him favored by 25% of the potential Republican voters.
So the number of all voters presently favoring Trump is 41% X 25% = 10.35% of the potential. If you haven't noticed that at least 10% of the voting population are right wing zealots, you just haven't been paying close attention.

(5,648 posts)... I hope that he will be able to stick around until he completely ruins the eventual Republican nominee's chances of getting election. Of course we can always hope that Trump with be their nominee, but I guess that's a bit much to wish for.
The top 10 Republican candidates in the polls will get into first two nationwide debates in August and September so it looks like the Donald will make onto the stage for both events. Trump will suck so much oxygen out of the room the other candidates will have wear gas masks and they will have to wear Teflon to ward of the slings and arrows he will fling their way. I can't wait!

This is the best version of TRUMP I have ever witnessed. He's a runaway freight train of emotion, anger & spitefulness. He has them spinning in fear of his attack. The phone # thing was just masterful. The ratings for the debates should be spectacular.
Almost every day now, my wife asks me if I see what TRUMP just did? It's glorious.
