CHICAGO (AP) The Texas Rangers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death in a Texas county jail cell of a 28-year-old woman with ties to the Chicago area.
Sandra Bland was found dead Monday morning in a jail cell in Waller County, about 60 miles from Houston. Texas authorities who performed an autopsy on Tuesday classified her death as suicide by hanging, according to the Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/1MuOHXf ). She had been arrested Friday in the county on a charge of assaulting a public servant.
Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis said Bland had traveled from Illinois to start a new job in Texas.
Mathis said the Texas Rangers would conduct a thorough investigation.
"I understand there's some disbelief among some friends and family that she would do this to herself," Mathis said.

(2,065 posts)"Bland was pulled over at about 4:30 p.m. Friday in Waller County for failing to signal a lane change, according to Trooper Erik Burse, a spokesman for the Public Safety Department.
She was outside the car and about to be issued a written warning when she kicked the officer, Burse said, and was then taken into custody."
Pulled over for not signaling a lane change?
Why would she be outside her car for a traffic stop?
It all sounds weird to me.

(2,065 posts)Imagine the officer's surprise when the much smaller (although unusually strong for her stature) woman suddenly, and without provocation, began to physically assault the large man who simply wanted to issue her a written warning.
It just makes sense.

Bastards. So unfair.
On edit: Every life lost is tragic. Whether educated and young, or an old guy just trying to get by. It's just horrifying. And ten to one the f'ing police in Waller country saw her as nothing but her skin. This crap is so wrong.
Sandra Bland. Sandra Bland.
Rachel Maddow, Laurence O'donnell, Chris Hayes? Expose these cockroaches in Waller County please!

After all we hire the sickest, most psychotic and most sadistic human beings in prisons, jails and police departments then treat them like Gods and "Heroes", let other psychotic and sadist cops conduct the investigation, rarely hold them accountable and if we do its time off with pay and we throw a little money at the victim's family.
You get what you paid for.
And the folks who respond with "way to jump to conclusions", "I'm reserving judgement until all the facts are in", "you know something we don't?", you created this.

(8,028 posts)...in the name of keeping us safe from terror, under the auspices of the PATRIOT Act and the NDAA, the true threat to American freedom lies not in some imaginary foreign boogeyman but rather here on our own streets.
The blue mafia is a much more dangerous enemy to the life, liberty and freedom of every U.S. citizen than the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and all other terror groups combined.
The genuine threat to America comes not from the outside but from within.

(16,191 posts)1) the slam of her head against the pavement that Sandra Bland talks about caused some type of brain injury and she died; the police tried to cover it up by faking suicide
2) they killed her intentionally
Suicide by hanging herself on a sheet isn't so likely.
I hope the family is getting an independent autopsy.
