Police and workers battle during the 1995 Detroit newspaper strike.

Newspaper workers began a strike against The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, owned by media giants Gannett and Knight-Ridder. Hundreds of workers were forced out by the companies' efforts to bust their union, The Newspaper Guild. Strikers fought back for five years, even publishing their own newspaper, but were no match for the deep pockets of the publishers. Police aided the companies by enabling them to bring in permanent replacements for the strikers. A weakened union eventually agreed to the employers' contract offer.
