Live Animals Are Stuck Inside These Plastic Keychains

This bizarre souvenir gives the phrase pocket pets new meaning.

Vendors in China have been selling live animal keychains for years: small plastic bubbles containing trapped turtles, fish, salamanders and frogs.

CNN first reported on them in 2011. The little animals are suspended in brightly colored liquid, often along with beads and other decorations, and are barely able to move.

The water supposedly contains oxygen and nutrients that can keep them alive for a few days.

Of course, animal activists have condemned the keychains as unnaturally cruel, as the animals inevitably die once their oxygen wears away.

In the best case scenario, they're freed from their prisons and end up as pets to people who aren't prepared to care for them.

There's also the psychological cruelty of trapping a sentient animal in a living grave.

Unfortunately it's not the first time animals have featured in unusual fashion trends. In South America, living beetles are covered in gems and worn as brooches. And earlier this year, a watch company unveiled a watch filled with live ants; after receiving widespread public backlash, the company said it was an early April Fool's joke.

it allows others to avoid this question.

A lot of people, enough to say that the culture as a whole, don't care about such critters. (There are exceptions to any cultural generalization, of course.)

Where I live my kid was grossed out by the glee with which the neighborhood teens avidly pulled the tails and legs off of anoles that they caught, or pulled and chopped toads to pieces . When some of the kids pointed the mayhem out to their parents, they attitude was either "it's that funny" or "don't bring that in my house."

This is north of Houston. When Bush II in his childhood exploded toads, we blamed it on his upper-crust, heartless, soulless upbringing. Can't do that for my mostly black working-class neighborhood, so let's just blame it on teen males.

Then again, last night I slaughtered ants by the thousand with no remorse at all. Really, a fire ant hill 18-24" away from outside spigot I use for watering is a crappy place for them. (Esp. when you stand there, in flip-flops, in the dark.) The little bastards got what they deserved.

My father worked in a glass factory and brought home a small lens used in spotlights - about 10 in in diameter. Of course, my brother and I went out and focused the sun's rays on everything that could burn. But, soon bored, we turned our attention to the ants in the yard and, sad to say, I burnt up quite a few with that death-heat ray.

OK, I get there's a vast cultural gap here, but this is the ugly side of unrestricted, greedy capitalism where money trumps all, regardless of the consequences. isn't the true test of any civilization how well it cares for the ALL the vulnerable things in it's keeping? It doesn't just begin and end with human beings, and China has no bragging rights there, but everything is so interconnected that it must include the ecology, flora and fauna as well.

When I was a kid, the bettas were kept in small bowls. And the small independent pet stores were usually pretty good about maintaining them (just a few or several at a time).

There was a chain in the Chicago area called Petworld. My friend's dad was a VP. My friend and I would do tank maintenance and set ups and staple flyers/couponbooks for mailings back in Jr. High. It was a great gig.

Animals in pet stores are never in an ideal setting, but this disposable pet thing in China is just base. I don't think it's a capitalist thing, but more a general antipathy toward any life. I don't know if it was like this before Mao, but you hear about the legendary infanticide of girl children.

The subordination of the self to the cultural revolution and the shear size and homogeony of the populace must lend itself to sociopathy being a survival advantage, especially during the ideological cleansing of the proles.

I will never forget that video of a few years ago that showed a van driver mow down a toddler in the street. He slowed down slightly to slowly roll his back wheel over the poor child's battered body-perhaps to not upset his cargo too much. Other passers by just nonchalantly walked around and past her as if avoiding a puddle.

I don't want to link to the video here, because it would ruin your day. It would bring you great sorrow and take days to recover.

When I was little I had pet turtles. I remember learning that the fad at that time of painting their shells killed them slowly and torturously. From then on, I announced that loudly anytime I saw them at vendors' stands, hoping to let people know.

It embarrassed my mother. Too bad. Sometimes I paid for it later, depending on her rage-levels that day/hour/moment.

I kept doing it anyway.

So, not scary.

Which leaves us the unfortunate truth that this is a cruel and heartless practice that will most likely benefit the manufacturers so long as the fad exists. Depressing as hell, but that's the world. It's a hell of a shame that the people buying these trinkets can't plant and nurture a tree instead.

Encasing live animals in keychains is typical of the way the Chinese feel about animals, IMO.

Here is another example of Chinese animal cruelty: (There are many more examples as well)

The diner seems to be having a veritable 'food-gasm'.

Then, there are the Chinese, who eat fresh, uncooked monkey brains--after the tops of their heads have just been lopped off and their bodies are still thrashing around.

The hapless animals are held firm in a sort of vice-grip so they can't escape.

The Nine Most Cruel and Controversial World Delicacies

Each culture has their own traditional foods that they enjoy, although occasionally, certain foods that appeal to a person in one place, but may not be appealing to someone in another part of the world.

These following foods from the world cuisine are not only peculiar in their ingredients, but they also appear to be very violent in their preparation and inflict great suffering on animals. Some of the following pictures and videos are pretty graphic, and should be approached with caution. They are included to present visual examples of these types of foods, and to show that these kinds of dishes are not rare in the world, but instead exist daily in many cultures.

All I can say is thank you Surya Gayatri for calling our attention to it. Or, how we allow them to treat their labor for our benefit I should say.

I don't know, it is a culture I have never really understood. Ours that is. When I saw Tienanmen Square as a child on TV, the last thing I wanted to do was help stifle them, and yet, we decided to do even worse and exploit trapped people for profit. Maybe they are just learning from the best.

it will be even easier for animals to be exploited tortured and killed for whatever purposes people have. One thing a lot of people don't realize is that in order to get the TPP agreed to, the United States had to agree to drop more stringent measures against shark finning and for those of you who don't know what shark finning is, I'll leave you to Google it.
