This bizarre souvenir gives the phrase pocket pets new meaning.
Vendors in China have been selling live animal keychains for years: small plastic bubbles containing trapped turtles, fish, salamanders and frogs.
CNN first reported on them in 2011. The little animals are suspended in brightly colored liquid, often along with beads and other decorations, and are barely able to move.
The water supposedly contains oxygen and nutrients that can keep them alive for a few days.
Of course, animal activists have condemned the keychains as unnaturally cruel, as the animals inevitably die once their oxygen wears away.
In the best case scenario, they're freed from their prisons and end up as pets to people who aren't prepared to care for them.
There's also the psychological cruelty of trapping a sentient animal in a living grave.
Unfortunately it's not the first time animals have featured in unusual fashion trends. In South America, living beetles are covered in gems and worn as brooches. And earlier this year, a watch company unveiled a watch filled with live ants; after receiving widespread public backlash, the company said it was an early April Fool's joke.

A lot of people, enough to say that the culture as a whole, don't care about such critters. (There are exceptions to any cultural generalization, of course.)
Where I live my kid was grossed out by the glee with which the neighborhood teens avidly pulled the tails and legs off of anoles that they caught, or pulled and chopped toads to pieces . When some of the kids pointed the mayhem out to their parents, they attitude was either "it's that funny" or "don't bring that in my house."
This is north of Houston. When Bush II in his childhood exploded toads, we blamed it on his upper-crust, heartless, soulless upbringing. Can't do that for my mostly black working-class neighborhood, so let's just blame it on teen males.
Then again, last night I slaughtered ants by the thousand with no remorse at all. Really, a fire ant hill 18-24" away from outside spigot I use for watering is a crappy place for them. (Esp. when you stand there, in flip-flops, in the dark.) The little bastards got what they deserved.

(7,014 posts)When I was a kid, the bettas were kept in small bowls. And the small independent pet stores were usually pretty good about maintaining them (just a few or several at a time).
There was a chain in the Chicago area called Petworld. My friend's dad was a VP. My friend and I would do tank maintenance and set ups and staple flyers/couponbooks for mailings back in Jr. High. It was a great gig.
Animals in pet stores are never in an ideal setting, but this disposable pet thing in China is just base. I don't think it's a capitalist thing, but more a general antipathy toward any life. I don't know if it was like this before Mao, but you hear about the legendary infanticide of girl children.
The subordination of the self to the cultural revolution and the shear size and homogeony of the populace must lend itself to sociopathy being a survival advantage, especially during the ideological cleansing of the proles.
I will never forget that video of a few years ago that showed a van driver mow down a toddler in the street. He slowed down slightly to slowly roll his back wheel over the poor child's battered body-perhaps to not upset his cargo too much. Other passers by just nonchalantly walked around and past her as if avoiding a puddle.
I don't want to link to the video here, because it would ruin your day. It would bring you great sorrow and take days to recover.
