If this doesn't get you choked up this morning I don't know what will. This is an excerpt from Joe Biden's speech from Freedom To Marry Celebration Of Victory gala in New York where he talks about the first time seeing two men kiss and how his father told him just exactly what he thought about that.
This has been a heroic battle, but it has been based on a very simple proposition best expressed at least to me by my dad when I was a 17-year-old kid. My dad was one of those as the Irish say, the highest compliment you give someone is he was a good man. My dad was a good and decent man.
And I was I learned early on I didnt like digging ditches in the summer with construction crews so I became a lifeguard. (Laughter.) But they paid a lot more money. I was in a county system, in a county pool. And they paid more money in the city. And so my dad on the way to his job in the morning, and this if you know anything about you probably dont my city of Wilmington, theres a place called Rodney Square. And the buildings surrounding Rodney Square were the DuPont Company; the Hercules Corporation, which was big then; and ICI Americas, and so there were a lot of plain grey suits. And an awful lot of at 8:00 in the morning, an awful lot of men and women hustling off to work.
But the courthouse is in that square. And my dad pulled up to let me run out and get an application for this job in the city, and then I was going to drive him to work and drive myself home.
And as we were stopped at the light, two men on the right very well-dressed men, obviously, business people working for either Hercules or DuPont turned and embraced one another and kissed each other. And they went their separate ways.
Ill never forget. I turned and looked at my dad, just looked at him. And Ill never forget what he said. He said, Joey, they love each other. Its simple. (Applause.) They love each other. Its simple

The whole video is at the link including a video clip of the section I posted at the link above. I will say this much, I defy you to find a better speaker out there than Joe Biden. He is the best there is here in the USA, he is a national treasure to this country!

Thanks Joe for the memory of our pleasant city.

(95,337 posts)I grew up in South Central PA outside of Harrisburg but I live in the city of Wilmington now. I'm actually over in the Little Italy neighborhood. When they had the funeral for Beau Biden that was 2 blocks from my house, so some of us went over to the viewing although we watched and listened from outside (wasn't really into waiting in the 5 hour line). Also we were a part of the protest against Westboro Baptist although Wilmington DE delegated them to 3 blocks north of St Anthonys. It kinda looked like Westboro Baptist was protesting the Cadillac dealership on Pennsylvania Avenue.

(4,113 posts)Where I live in RW country, everybody parrots what they hear on the RW talk shows and Faux Snooze and bitch that Biden is some loose cannon. Then I see things like this post. Then I think about our previous VP Dick Cheney who talked about nothing but killing and destroying, lying and making obscene amounts of money while doing it and telling others to go F*** themselves.
I'll say it again - if people in this country were half as loyal to their faith as they are to their politics, they' all be up for sainthood.

(95,337 posts)I grew up in Rural PA and there was alot of hate in my home county. But I am glad that my parents tried to teach me to be above the hate although honestly that was mainly a discussion towards people of other races and religions. Different sexual preferences was just never discussed.
I just wanted to live somewhere that I wasn't surrounded by so much hate. It's weird, when you grow up in an all-white county, those racist assholes will find someone else to bully - like if you are 'too white' or 'too smart' or god forbid not Christian enough. I gave rural PA 20 years of my life - that was enough. I love the city.

(26,626 posts)I remember being 12 and seeing two women in a passionate kiss. I looked at my mom with my mouth hanging open. My mom (who had served in the Woman Marines, 1942-1945) said, "close your mouth, you look like a fish. It's love. They love each other. It's simple."
Thanks for a good post and a good memory. Even for an old cynic like me.. love finally wins! It's simple.

(95,337 posts)Mind you that was probably 30 years ago, remember I came from rural PA and didn't know any better.
I realized I was just hating.
They were just loving.
The math was simple and let's face it nothing ages a person quicker than sitting around hating all the time.
And in the end I think we folks obsess too much about what is going on in a person's bedroom. It's not like the only thing straight people do in the bedroom is the missionary position.

(95,337 posts)I adore all 5 of the current democratic primary candidates but my heart is just not with any of them to get out there and actively support them during the primaries. This is the thing if the primaries ended tomorrow - whoever wins I'll be very happy to spend every weekend actively campaigning for to help them win the White House in 2016. So why not just save my energy until the fall and let them duke it out until then?
But I just know my heart of hearts if I do help out with any primary campaign my heart is with Joe Biden. I'll be happy to help out in the primaries and maybe even make some campaign calls (which I hate doing) to help get Joe elected. I know Joe can get elected. I think he has a great but not perfect record. And I think he can do an amazing job.
But like I said, in the end I'm on Team Democrat all the way 2016!

The Right controls too much sway in DC and they don't consider Obama to be popular.
Hell, some of them think he stole the election twice.

(2,805 posts)He is a good guy. Having lived in Delaware for most of my life, I have met him several times.
All that aside he may have recognized 50 years ago that gays are OK but he played politics until it was OK to say so. He is a good guy but not willing to stand out for a particular idea. His going along with the bankruptcy law is another thorn in my side.
I like Joe and love this particular speech. But why has he not been more vocal about gay rights the last 35 years of his career? He could have done better!
I'm judging the guy. He knows what is right but he plays politics until it is acceptable. I like him but he has to be a bit more difficult to get my vote. I voted for Obama, knowing he didn't know how to get things done in Washington, ala Jimmy Carter but unless Biden shows a little more backbone my heart is still with Bernie Sanders.
