MI public-works employee finds gun at work -- turns it in -- loses job for having a gun at work.

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2012/05/16/michigan-worker-fired-after-turning-in-gun-found-on-the-job/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter

Police told Chevilott he did the right thing by getting the gun off the streets, he said. A check revealed that it had been stolen from a nearby suburb in 2005.

Where he ran into trouble is with his superiors, who saw things rather differently.

A Wayne County spokeswoman told WJBK that according to department rules employees aren't allowed to possess a weapon on work property.

Just two years shy of retirement... that'll save the state some money.

I'd sue the crap out of Wayne County. Don't forget to ask for a jury trial either.

they prefer the worker has no recourse

The union representing Chevilott, Local 101, has filed a grievance and intends to fight all three accusations.

Please tell me that for whatever reason they had a grudge against Chevilott and used this flimsy excuse as a reason to fire him...

The guy who found/turned in the gun should be reinstated immediately. All the people involved in (1) creating the silly ass zero tolerance rules, and (2) firing the guy should be immediately fired themselves and stripped of all pensions...and for good measure have their pictures posted around town calling them out for the idiots they are.

A similar thing happened a few years back to an acquaintance of a friend. The daughter (honor student) was expelled from school for having a weapon. The weapon was a swiss army knife in a first aid kit, in the trunk of her car.

ZERO TOLERANCE = ZERO BRAINS
