...A good man, and a great man. Ahead of his time on so many things. But not a successful President, alas. I was close to several influential Dem pols during the Carter administration, and they all told me the same thing--Carter basically regarded Congress, even Tip O'Neill's Congress, as an adversary and decided to go over their heads and push his agenda directly to the American people. And that just didn't work. By the time he realized his mistake, it was too late. And it was all a damned shame...
