16. I've noticed from reading at the DU that

even the smallest criticism related to a feminist or even a general women-related issue is immediately met with strong opposition and argumentativeness. Either that, or it's soundly ignored. I find this very interesting.

I've read some pretty sexist things here, things that at first I was surprised to see on a democratic site that has many progressive members...but then I wasn't surprised upon reflection. Sexism and outright misogyny is a constant in American society and progressives haven't made much progress when it comes to its pervasive nature. What's worse is that it is not criticized in the same way that other bigotry is completely condemned with no exceptions. There's always a "yeah, but..." when it comes to a woman's issue. A man punched a woman in the face...on camera..."yeah, but HE SAID she kneed him in the groin..." A woman is raped every two minutes in this country..."yeah, but what about false accusations?" The US Women's World Cup team is given far less money than the men's team..."yeah, but the women aren't as popular..." and on and on.

There's a lot of hostility and victim-blaming and excuses when it comes to women's issues around here. But it's not only around here. It's everywhere. It is too bad that there is no respite from it on the DU, but that only proves we have a lot of work to do because if any group is going to properly address it, it is the left. There's no one else, so let's get to it and stop shitting on women and "yeah, butting" this bigotry.
