The Owl Ride is an annual tradition for the Gehringer family.

Jacob Gehringer, a 19-year-old with Down syndrome, and his dad, Jeff Gehringer, will participate in the nighttime cycling event on Saturday for the sixth year in a row.

The duo from Papillion will ride their tandem bike 17 miles through the streets of Omaha to support the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities. The foundation provides programs, such as cooking classes and a book club, to help improve the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities. Last year’s Owl Ride raised $50,000 for the foundation, according to organizers.

“The ride is really awesome,” said Jacob, who is a member of the foundation’s book club. “When we go up hills, I have to pedal just as hard as my dad does. But the downside is easier.”
