Ruby was born on a meat farm with dozens of other rabbits stacked around her in wire cages. She took her first breath in a place that no rabbit ever leaves alive. But on one fateful spring day, the rabbit farmer had a visit from some family members who asked if they could take one of the babies home with them. No bigger than a ball of yarn, Ruby went riding down the road in the backseat of a car on her way to a new life.
In the beginning, Ruby lived in the downstairs family room of the home. She was sweet and curious and the family grew fond of her, often sitting with her on the couch and encouraging her to jump up for a treat. But, Ruby was alone a lot and there were times when she didnt have proper food. Left to come up with her own solution, Ruby began to chew the wallpaper. The family grew impatient and annoyed. By the time Ruby had reached 2-years-old, it had been decided that they would either put her in a backyard hutch, release her into the woods or allow their sons to try their hand at butchering her for meat.
If you dont take her, my sons are going to kill her soon, Rubys guardian told me by phone as I stood in my kitchen putting groceries away. Theyve been talking about trying the rabbit meat business.
Can you please just hold her for me, I asked calmly while squashing a familiar wave of dread. Just give me time to get there.
