"In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdon Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdon who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family responded spectacularly by way of the letter seen below (a letter which, according to newspapers at the time, he dictated).
Rather than quote the numerous highlights in this letter, I'll simply leave you to enjoy it. Do make sure you read to the end."
The letter is rich in innuendo, sarcasm, and telling the tale of a slave owner who had no clue as to what he was asking. I can only imagine he came to realize the true worth of his once bound slave when he had to do the work in the fields himself.

(1,554 posts)Were you able to catch any of the shows? I was fortunate to be in Chicago for Friday and Saturday nights, but could not find a ticket for Sunday. They were great, but Jerry was sorely missed.

I feel really lucky to have caught the couple I did.

(149,627 posts)The man was so smart. His words were humble but full of many layers of meaning.
And we enslaved him. Shame on us for having done that heinous deed. I wonder if his former owner felt any shame.
He should have.

The $11,680 owed the Andersons would have been $17,267 in 1865 dollars...and $291,973 in 2015 dollars!

(12,051 posts)to write his former slave, whom he treated like dirt and tried to kill, and ask him to come back to the scene of his enslavement and live with the man who abused him. That slave owner reminds me of a lot of the present-day Republicans, frankly. Completely insensitive to anything but their own desires.
