Eric Holder and 6 more Covington lawyers in Justice Dept Criminal Division Return to Real Employer

Holder’s return, along with the return of a half-dozen other Covington lawyers who left in 2009 to join the administration.

When the firm moved from 1201 Pennsylvania Ave. to its new building at City Center DC late last year, one office stood empty for Holder: a corner on the 11th floor.

“People always had laughed and wondered about who they’re saving the office for,” said James Garland, Holder’s former deputy chief of staff who rejoined Covington in 2010. “Everybody wanted to know, ‘When’s Eric coming back? What’s his plan?’ I would just say I don’t know.”

Holder and his wife, Sharon Malone, a physician, bought a $1.5 million condominium in a residential building at City Center a year ago, a mere 300 feet from the Covington offices. And an abstract work by artist Francie Hester, the firm chairman’s wife, hangs in the residence. Holder and Malone still keep a home in Upper Northwest D.C. near American University.

In addition to Garland, several former colleagues joined Covington after leaving Holder’s Justice Department. Those lawyers include Covington partners Lanny Breuer and Mythili Raman, who each led the Criminal Division under Holder. Breuer, one of the longest-serving Criminal Division assistant attorney generals, is now vice chairman of the firm.
