There is at least one other identifiable group this impacts: Trans* individuals who are married. Because of the varied ways in which states define gender, trans* individuals in both same & mixed gender marriages have more protection.
My high school sweetheart whose gender is female on all of her documents is married to a woman. They were not, as many have been, forced to divorce as part of transition. Now, the threat that their marital status will be questioned is gone.
Similarly, I have trans* friends in mixed gender marriages - or who would like to be, but have thus far been prevented because the state they are in refuses to accept anything other than their gender assigned at birth. These friends can now enter into mixed gender marriages even if their state believes them to be same gender. And - those trans* friends already in mixed gender marriages never have to worry that someone will challenge their gender identity and rip their marriages apart.
The sexual orientation claimed by these friends of mine runs the gamut. Some identify as gay, some don't, and in some their or their partner's identification is at odds with the gender of their partner.
