as a gesture to protest Eduardo Saverin renouncing his US citizenship to avoid paying taxes on the billions he expects to make when FB has its IPO on Friday.
I know it's a tiny gesture on the grand scheme of things, but I just can't see using that site knowing that my contributions and those of everybody else are what helped make those guys rich enough to be able to leave the country and then screw the country over taxes.

(17,086 posts)Were you just looking for an excuse to close your account? Just because some minor stockholder is greedy doesn't seem like justification for a boycott. What about the FB co-founder that is matching donations to support the same sex marriage referendum in Maine? http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=120681
I participate in many daily activities with people I disagree with on various things. If I boycotted them all for their views it wouldn't leave me with much. As much as I dislike Curt Shilling's politics, I'm not going to stop watching the Red Sox forever because of them.

(45,851 posts)It was the actions of the person in question that caused the account closing.
Views and actions are two quite different things..

(17,086 posts)It really didn't add anything substantive to the conversation, or rebut my response, but we are all clear on the difference between "views" and "actions" now. I'll choose my language more carefully in the future, so as not to offend.

(763 posts)Welcome to the Facebook-Haters Club.
If you're looking for a social network to replace it, Diaspora* is an open-source (i.e., will never have an IPO) alternative. It's the faster-growing of secure, private alternatives to Facebook.
The problem, of course, is getting your friends and family to stop posting their dinner and playing Farmville and dumping that corporate spy machine for a sane alternative.
Diaspora* seeds (the equivalent of an account) are available at public pods (it's a decentralized network, unlike FB) worldwide. Here's a couple of the more stable ones: diasp.org, diasporaproject.org, poddery.com.
If you decide to go for Diaspora* anyway, you will join a very international, EXTREMELY liberal user-base. Diaspora* is the social network of choice for geeks, nerds, dorks and activists. (#OWS was our first trending hashtag). And it could use more users joining up, now that they're out of testing and into Alpha.
