South Carolina has 19 active hate groups, monitor says

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 16 groups in South Carolina support white supremacist ideology, including six categorized as neo-Confederate, or advocating for the secession of the South from the rest of the United States. One of the neo-Confederate groups, League of the South, which has chapters in 15 other states, promotes slavery.

2. It is horrible, but the map doesn't give as clear a picture as I could wish.

For example: There are 10 groups active in Washington state. Are those 10 groups of 20 people or 10 groups of 1000?

Of course, I realize getting actual numbers is a daunting if not impossible task, but it would be helpful to know what kind of numbers we are really looking at per state to get a better idea of what we are really up against.

4. If you read their Intelligence Report,

on the web site, it will give you some idea of the kinds of things these hate groups do. Most of it is illegal, but they rarely get sent to prison for the laws they break. It does give you some idea how how many people are involved in each of the hate groups that they do articles on. It doesn't give you exact figures/numbers, but it does give you some idea of just how dangerous these groups really are and even names people involved. There is a famous attorney in NC that most people do not even know routinely defends the KKK and other racist hate groups. Most people think he is just a lawyer and don't even put two and two together. He defends those groups because he is active in them as well.

I don't think about the numbers of people in the groups. It took one to kill 9 innocent people and what was it, three that were involved in the Oklahoma City bombing? Eric Rudolph was one guy too. It was down to one guy involved in that weird neo-Nazi religion that tried to (try to) put a hit out on a federal judge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_F._Hale#Federal_convictions

Push comes to shove, it doesn't matter if it is only one, that one has the potential to be a major threat to the rest of us. So, that's one way to look at it. I wish we could find a way to keep these hate groups from getting so powerful in certain areas like they are. I know it's bad in the western part of NC and some parts of Indiana, like thousands in areas that are very low population in the first place.

I've been watching these groups for years. I highly recommend reading the SPLC's Intelligence Report, including back issues. It will give you a better handle on just how these groups operate, what kind of people are involved and the things they do. Not all that they do is directly violent, but the kinds of things they are involved in, lots of illegal gun running, for example, lead to the potential threat of major violence. They should have been the ones the government was going after even before 9/11.

5. Yup, but really, context does matter.

Some sites like picking open wounds, esp. when they make others look bad.

In fact, that's all they do. Even news sites can be jingoist. Most have some sort of agenda; good ones try to hide it, and very goods ones may have an agenda but you can't ever really tell what it is because they try to think more than they try to proselytize or agitate.
