Film: The Intruder (1962)

The Intruder (1962) is a largely forgotten drama about a slick, manipulative white con artist who incites racial unrest in a small southern town against its black population for personal and political gain.

The film was directed by Roger Corman, who is largely remembered for producing/directing horror and science fiction B-films during the 50s and 60s (plus launching the careers of directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante and James Cameron). The script was by Charles Beaumont, who contributed scripts to the original Twilight Zone series. And in the starring role is a pre-Star Trek William Shatner, giving a pretty compelling and unsettling performance.

The film had a lot of difficulty getting made. One of the more interesting facts is that the filmmakers actually made the movie in the Deep South even though this was at the height of the Jim Crow era.
