Thought I would drop in to tell you, if TPP becomes the law of the land, there is a 100% chance I will become an independent voter. Too many of you are naive. See you soon. Go Bernie.

(8,217 posts)However, I really can't. When I think of the chances of another Republican winning the Presidency, I just can't.
You can consider me hopelessly naive, but I voted for Obama knowing full well that he was not going to be able to do much, and that he was more conservative than I, and his position is very close to how Hillary is/was.
I would vote for him again, if only to shut out the possibility of a President Palin/Romney/Trump.
I just can't do it...

(8,217 posts)I calculate how probable a Republican win is, and if there is even a 20% chance that they would, I would vote for the Democrat, depending on how bad the Republican possibility is. I mean, back in the 90s, it would not have been so bad, but I posit that they have gone to the deep end, and they just don't know how to govern any more. Handing them any position means giving them legitimacy, and I am not willing to give them any.

But you are not naive.

We never had spoken about politics before...but I said to him recently that I was very worried about the TPP, TTIP etc..
He said..'it's very bad..
Drug prices will rise,
Taxes will rise,
The $ provinces will pay for health care will rise,
The cost of insurance premiums will rise'.
Brand drug companies are very powerful.'

(1,925 posts)But the man I refer to started the Pharmacy with 2 other partners maybe 15 years ago..
He works daily in the Pharmacy as a Pharmacist himself.
But he understands the economics of running the business..that is why I asked his opinion.
which ordinarily I would not do...
I do not believe that politics and professional day to day work..mix.

(50,414 posts)I registered as a Democrat in California in 1965. I registered as a Democrat in Oregon in 1982. I registered in Washington as a Democrat in 1993. But, Washington no longer registers by party so I'm now, official, an Independent. I'm a Democrat here because I say so.
"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all." --Thomas Jefferson to Francis Hopkinson, 1789.

(72,790 posts)so I guess I've always had an independent streak. Most of the time, those candidates I have voted for have been DEMs, but just because someone is a D, doesn't mean they will always get my vote. I am a bit fortunate to live in CT, where there is usually some good DEM candidates, and they usually always win.
Since we're sharing.

(10,007 posts)That time has come and gone. Democrats now help bust unions, pass worker-hostile 'trade' agreements, wage wars of choice, criminalize journalism, 'reform' social security and support due-process-free political executions.
Better to be loyal to the admirable ideas they used to hold than to the hollow shell the Democratic Party is now.

A myopic, toxic attitude that guarantees ruin.
The lack of ability to self-reflect is a definite indicator of anti intellectualism. Civilization cannot survive without consistently applied critical thinking and self-reflection. That's just the way it is. I didn't make it up.
Check these articles out, I think they are right up your alley:

(10,007 posts)What is extremely disturbing is how "truth" is becoming partisan.
For example, Rand Paul can make a statement about how the ubiquitous surveillance state is dangerous, and DU will have hordes of posters step up to defend the surveillance state simply because Rand Paul attacked it.
What can we do in the face of such ignorance?

(33,688 posts)The TPP gives panels of corporate-owned attorneys the power to invalidate national, state and local laws that interfere with corporate profitability. That is not an opinion, that is a fact.
Therefore anyone who supports the TPP is an enabler and supporter of corporate feudalism/fascism.
