Whenever a politician claims
to have "evolved" on an issue
any critical thinker should see
a red flag.
When a politician does an about face
on a political hot potato can we
honestly believe they have had some
life altering epiphany, or is it simply
political expediency?
If we are to believe these "evolutions"
then we have all witnessed both
Lindsey Graham and Nikki Haley's
come to Jesus moment...hallelujah!
Axelrod writes that he knew Obama was in favor of same-sex marriages during the first presidential campaign, even as Obama publicly said he only supported civil unions, not full marriages. Axelrod also admits to counseling Obama to conceal that position for political reasons. Opposition to gay marriage was particularly strong in the black church, and as he ran for higher office, he grudgingly accepted the counsel of more pragmatic folks like me, and modified his position to support civil unions rather than marriage, which he would term a sacred union, Axelrod writes.

"She will be watching closely to see what is being done to crack down on currency manipulation, improve labor rights, protect the environment and health, promote transparency and open new opportunities for our small businesses to export overseas,"
Yet, previously as secretary of state, Clinton called the Trans-Pacific Partnership the "gold standard in trade agreements." In her second memoir, Hard Choices, released in 2014, Clinton lauded the deal, saying it "would link markets throughout Asia and the Americas, lowering trade barriers while raising standards on labor, the environment, and intellectual property." She even said it was "important for American workers, who would benefit from competing on a more level playing field." She also called it "a strategic initiative that would strengthen the position of the United States in Asia."

AND NOW...
republicans are "evolving" on racism?
Or maybe just symbols of racism???
I am urging that the Confederate battle flag be removed from State House grounds to an appropriate location, he said in a statement. I hope that, by removing the flag, we can take another step towards healing and recognition and a sign that South Carolina is moving forward.
Gov. Nikki Haley also called for the flags removal at a news conference at the Capitol in Columbia. The states other senator, Tim Scott, also a Republican, was expected to do the same, The Post and Courier of Charleston reported on Monday.

After sidestepping questions about the issue over the weekend, Gov. Scott Walker on Monday said he supports South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's call to remove the Confederate flag from the state Capitol.
"I am glad @nikkihaley is calling for the Confederate flag to come down. I support her decision - SKW," Walker tweeted from his political account shortly after Haley called for the flag to be taken down.

(4,858 posts)...like it or not, this is how democracy works. Read sometime a good book on Lincoln and slavery. He too "evolved"...as did FDR on the Nazis, Truman--and LBJ--on Civil Rights...Obama on Gay Marriage...Nixon on Communist China...the list is endless...

(3,498 posts)People don't "evolve" ONLY
during campaign seasons.
Abandoning ones true core values
to curry favor is not leadership.
It's morally and ethically questionable.
So are we to believe politicians
who evolve or flip-flop when the
issue is a political hot potato?
Should we believe that Walker,
Graham and Haley have seen the light
and NOW recognize the confederate flag
as a racist symbol...
or is it simply political expediency?
WE cannot trust politicians who "evolve"
during a campaign or only when
they are under public scrutiny.
