Alabama Congressman Says Those Seeking to Remove Confederate Flag Are “Beyond Contempt”

Speaking on a local radio program this morning, Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., criticized the growing call for South Carolina to remove the Confederate battle flag that flies at the state capitol.

Political figures in South Carolina and across the country have demanded that the flag come down in the wake of the massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. The demand to remove the rebel flag grew even louder over the weekend after the discovery of Dylann Roof’s manifesto, which glorified segregation and featured pictures of Roof posing with the Confederate flag.

Asked by host Matt Murphy about the controversy over the flag, Palmer said the calls to remove the flag came from “people that have an agenda seeking to exploit a tragedy.” He added that, “to me, that’s beyond contempt.”

that's pretty lame, but it's hardly the only area where there might be some tough after-tragedy questions

"Was it really a good idea to build a nuclear power plant on a fault line?"
"Would we be better off with a strong air-traffic controllers' union?"
"Did Iraq actually have WMDs?"
"Does hydraulic fracturing have an adverse impact on our ground water quality?"
"How long should we really let an interstate bridge go without regular maintenance?"
"Can you please take down the racist traitor flag?"

sometimes, the only way we get change at all is when people with "an agenda... exploit a tragedy".

49 years old.

Never worked hard a day in his fucking life.

Founded and ran a conservative think tank in Alabama for 25 years (as if there would be any other kind in that state)

Hey Gary! You were born in the 1960's, for crying out loud! Smoke a joint, you asshole!

The 50's called. Uhhhh...ummmm.....no, they don't want you either.

(Well, that's very weird! My iPad keeps putting up A Cricket players Wiki page instead of the Alabama chucklehead! Well...google him yourselves!)

The winners were really rather nice about the whole thing, considering how nasty the war had been

.. At around 2:00 in the afternoon on April 9, Lee and Grant met at the McLean House in the village with a group of officers. The Union general granted Lee favorable terms of surrender: allowing the men to return to their homes and letting the officers, cavalrymen, and artillerymen keep their swords and horses if the men agreed to lay down their arms and abide by federal law. Grant even supplied food to the Rebels, who were desperately low on rations ... The formal ceremony and collection of weapons took place on April 12 under the supervision of Brig. Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. As ranks of Confederate soldiers came forward to hand over their weapons and flags, Chamberlain ordered his men to salute their defeated adversaries as a gesture of respect ...

Jeff Davis was never hanged from a sour apple tree

Now, a hundred fifty years later, almost everybody has gotten over it, except for a handful of hateful fringe lunatics who still fondly recall the years of chattel slavery. And it's a sad thing to see you sucking up for the crazy vote, Gary

as a conservative Republican aren't you all about States' Rights? If South Carolina decides to step into the 21st Century and stop flying the flag of a treasonous group, that's their business and not yours. So STFU.

30. CSA was an enemy state
Tue Jun 23, 2015, 12:27 PM

CSA was an enemy state to the United States, even though Lincoln said it wasn't as a way of demonstrating his compassion for the fallen South. Anyone flying that flag is an enemy of the United States, just as if they flew the flag of ISIS, the NVA, or any other avowed enemy. Hundreds of thousands died to make sure that racist rag ended up in the dirt and only Our enemies would even think of picking it back up. I can't help that their ancestors were slave owners or racist rednecks. That's their problem, not mine. They were the enemy and they lost the war. Get over it. If it had been most Yankees at the time, instead of Lincoln, all those racist traitors would have been hung or shot. Any state that flies the flag of the CSA should have all federal funding cut, and we all know the Red states get a lot more federal dollars than they donate to the feds in taxes.
