Attack at EmmanuelAME church was on 193rd Anniversary of 1822 Slave Revolt

Fascinating report at Raw Story: I will snip some of the best stuff -  PLEASE go read it all as fair use stifles the ability to do justice to this report.

Thanks, in advance.

Denmark Vesey and five slaves were hanged in July 1822 for allegedly plotting a revolt that authorities at the time claimed would have involved thousands of slaves in Charleston and at nearby plantations.

The slave revolt was planned for June 17, 1822 – the same day that a gunman walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and opened fire on a prayer service.

There were secret trials and the original 5 conspirators were hanged a few days later. Whites, of course, continued to freak out and killed about 30 more slaves. Federal troops were called in to maintain order.

There is mention of a law that was passed requiring FREE NEGROES who were sailors to be imprisoned when docking in Charleston to 'prevent further unrest'.

Many historians believe that Charleston’s mayor, James Hamilton Jr., and other officials exaggerated the scale of the rebellion to end what he believed to be softer, paternalistic treatment of slaves.

"Black Christianity" was also blamed and the Church was burned down and outlawed. It was not rebuilt until the 1890s.

but decided NOT to give this much more airing. Suffice it to say... it was big at certain radical right wing places.
