(33,688 posts)Apparently no one read the lyrics.
The Boss was NOT amused in the slightest and had it stopped.
Princess Sparklemoose used Heart's "Barracuda" for a while in 2008. At least until Ann and Nancy found out about it and went ballistic. The C&D letter issued more or less immediately after they found out.

Here's my favorite.
Song: "Still The One"
Controversy: McCain's use of the song following the New Hampshire primary (one he won for the second time) invited the ire of former Orleans member and song co-writer John Hall, who also happens to be a Democratic Congressman from New York.
Result: Hall sent a cease-and-desist letter (just like he did in 2004, when the Bush campaign co-opted the same tune). The McCain campaign had no comment.

(11,086 posts)Big businesspeople know that's just another tool in their toolbox. If you can't get the rights, or permission, or don't want to wait, you just use it and let the other guy sue. It's called "negotiation through lawsuits."
In cases like Trump's, or Romney using "Fortunate Son" or "Panic Switch" or McCain using "Still the One" or "Barracuda" or "Pink Houses" or "Our Country" or "Running on Empty" or Bachmann using "American Girl" or Huckabee using "More Than a Feeling" or Reagan using "Born in the USA," what damages can the artist demand? Really, nothing. All they can do is demand that the campaign cease and desist from using it in the future. http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/16/politics/music-in-campaigns/index.html
The Republicans should all just use "Eve of Destruction." Or maybe they should go with the parody version of a Woody Guthrie song:
"This land is my land, it isn't your land
I got a shotgun, and you don't got none
If you don't get off, I'll blow your head off
This land was made just for me."
