D.C. cardinal destroys Rush Limbaugh with a smile: America’s ‘blessing’ is freedom to rant without ‘facts’

Wuerl reacted by pointing out that the pope was within his authority to provide a “moral frame of reference” to Catholics — like Bush — without dictating specific policies.

“So the pope is talking about what should we be doing, not here is a political agenda that you must accept,” Wuerl explained during an appearance on Fox News. “I think that’s the richness of his contribution to all of this. There is a human dimension in everything we do, and that therefore carries with it a moral and ethical dimension.”

Fox News host Chris Wallace noted that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh had accused Pope Francis of “choosing sides” by publicly taking a position on climate change.

“Essentially what this papal encyclical is suggesting is that every Catholic should vote for the Democrat {SIC} Party,” Limbaugh ranted last week. “How in the hell else do you interpret it when the pope comes out and sounds like Al Gore on global warming and climate change?”

“This is one of the great blessings of America,” Wuerl replied with a smile. “We’re all allowed to speak our mind even if we don’t have all the facts, even if we don’t have a clear view of what the other person is saying. We’re all allowed to speak our mind, and that’s what he’s doing.”

“I think what the pope is doing is something very, very different from that,” he continued. “He’s saying, why don’t we all discuss this, why don’t we come to the table and before we start eliminating other people from the discussion or renouncing them or even ridiculing them, why don’t we listen to them and see what they’re saying and see where we really ought to be going as a human family?”

One thing those guys have going for them is many are in autonomous, independent churches. Even those that belong to the Southern Baptist Convention are independent. Churches like Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist and the like are nice big juicy targets for the IRS and so their pastors shy away from telling parishioners who to vote for. The IRS needs to come down on the small with a vengeance.

I am a Christian Catholic and I firmly believe that one of the greatest things about this country is the separation of Church and state. It needs to be enshrined in everlasting law.

but these radicals will chip away at it anyway they can. It's like most of the women's clinics that offered a lot of services including abortions are closed in Texas. They didn't make it illegal just made it very expensive for a clinic to stay open.

We don't have a poll tax in Texas but with photo ID required it is very difficult for someone who doesn't drive to get on in my area. There is one DPS office for miles and miles and it is on the outskirts of town. The courthouse is downtown where you must get a certified birth certificate and if you jump through all the hoops to get the ID the tax office has moved way to the south in a hard to find place. That's were you register to vote in Texas. These people are experts in working around laws that are meant to protect us. They will twist whatever they can to give themselves an advantage.

pretend he does not have other major areas of agreement with Limbaugh and the Republicans. I remember many occasions when this Cardinal has attacked the LGBT community in haughty, condescending and self important tones.

"The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington signed on to a letter to members of the U.S. Senate on March 20 calling for Congress to block a D.C. bill that would protect LGBT students from discrimination at religious schools operating in the city.

The letter, which was signed, among others, by Cardinal Donald Wuerl calls the Human Rights Amendment Act approved by the D.C. Council last year an attack on religious freedom, freedom of speech and freedom of association in the nation’s capital.

The letter also calls on Congress to kill another bill approved by the Council and signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act. That measure would prohibit D.C. employers from discriminating against employees based on their personal reproductive health choices, including a decision to have an abortion."

I'm gay and pro-choice and Wuerl is on Rush's side, not mine.
