Huckabee: Confederate flag-waving South Carolina can’t be racist because it has an ‘Indian’ governor

Appearing on Meet The Press, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee refused to condemn the state of South Carolina for flying the Confederate flag, instead saying the state can’t possibly be racist because they elected an ‘Indian’ governor.

Speaking with host Chuck Todd, the possible Republican presidential nominee continually avoided offering a personal opinion on the flag, failing to answer whether he would ever display one. Instead he turned the questions about flying the flag representing the Confederacy into a defense of the people of South Carolina.

“We’re asking, ‘Is South Carolina a racist state because of the flag on their capital grounds?'” Huckabee said. “Here’s what I can tell you. As a frequent visitor to South Carolina, this is a state that largely white people elected a female governor of Indian descent and the first ever African-American senator from the South.”

Huckabee went on to compare the diversity of South Carolina’s lawmakers to liberal bastions such as New York and Massachusetts, before Todd attempted, once again, to turn the discussion back to the flag.

The last Confederate force to surrender was led by Brig. Gen. Stand Watie, a Cherokee who led a cavalry force made up mostly of Cherokee, Muskogee and Seminole tribesmen.

The Confederate Government couldn't be racist because its Secretary of War was a Jew -- Benjamin Judah.

The Republican Party has no racism because Ben Carson (what more need be said?).

Wow. What a fun but fruitless game.

complex topics like does that flag signify and glorify racism.

When there is a perception that the flag is somehow hurting bidness, it will disappear so fast it'll make your head swim.

The Yankee dollar trumps "southern heritage" every time.

than a flourescent bulb, a racist can consider you to be "colored." My first husband was Iranian and darker than me by a few shades. At the first family get together following our marriage, one of my uncles pulled me aside and said, "shame on you for marrying a n*****." He didn't mean knucklehead. I don't know if he was speaking for himself or was the designated spokesperson forca contingent too cowardly to speak for themselves. There are people like that. I went on to marry a black man later in life and I don't go back often. We make our family with people who love and respect us.
