South Carolina Supreme Court Orders New Judge in Charleston Shooter Case
by Elizabeth Chuck and Erika Angulo
The South Carolina Supreme Court has ordered a new judge to preside in the case against the Charleston church shooter.
The change came as revelations later surfaced that Charleston County Magistrate James Gosnell Jr., who presided over confessed gunman Dylann Roof's bond hearing on Friday, made racist comments in a courtroom over a decade ago.
Gosnell was reprimanded by the state Supreme Court in 2005 for telling a black defendant in 2003, "There are four kinds of people in this world: black people, white people, rednecks, and n******."

(113,063 posts)they can with Republicans in that state to keep the worst of the fallout from attaching itself to the entire party, though it's their political machines and propaganda media that has been using racism, subtle and blatant, to get elected for decades.

(14,130 posts)considering it's South Carolina.
Glad they took care of this poor excuse for a judge. It would be great if they could find a way to get him off the bench for good.

(13,871 posts)If you read the story, the SC Supreme Court did not take any action against that judge. He is a magistrate, and cannot preside over a murder charge hearing. His only role was to put him in jail on a weapons charge and emphasize that he could not get out until a Circuit Judge heard his plea on murder charges.
I guess someone wanted to get people to read their non-story.
Note that in the story it states that this is standard, required procedure.

(28,123 posts)a non story given his "heartfelt" request to feel sorry for the family of the animal, roof before even giving lip service to the pain that a church full and nation of people feel at the senseless act of racist murder committed by the animal, roof.

(13,871 posts)Non-story refers to the headline that the SC Supreme Court removed the judge. They took no action at all. The magistrate (who was reprimanded in 2003 and did make uncalled for remarks during the hearing) set bail on a weapons charge but he cannot hear a plea for murder - that will be left to a Circuit Judge.
Again, as the story says, the case was handled in a required and routine manner.
The inaccuracy has since been corrected on the NBC website, which you can see at the OP's link.

(73,555 posts)The magistrate was not able, for example, to address the issue of bail on the majority of the charges; his role was limited.

(541 posts)I have family who say the "four kinds of people" thing (in not those exact words but the message is clear) with relative frequency, ---not uncommon to hear it said in Same Company where I'm at--- but good to see that a county magistrate saying it on the record, in a public court, has been reprimanded and pulled from the Roof case. Nice to see judges spewing crap held to account. Good golly. And as another poster said ...so quick and expeditious.
Nice work, SC Supreme Court!

(12,655 posts)no way anyone is going to risk a mistrial on some kind of technical issue.even if this is sop,i am glad he is off this case. too sympathetic to the murderer's family and by entension, possibly the murderer himself. wouldn't trust him.
