I am not being disrespectful toward this denomination. I grew up in that church. We withdrew our membership finally when the church leaders from the pulpit declared Iraq a holy war.
I just would like to know the stance of the three who are running for president. Do they side with whatever the Supreme Court rules about same sex marriage? Or do they side with their church.
Here are the ones running:
Three Southern Baptists running for president
A third Southern Baptist entered the 2016 presidential race when Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) threw his hat into the ring June 1.
Graham, who announced his candidacy at a rally in his hometown of Central, S.C., joins fellow Southern Baptists Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee in an increasingly crowded field for the GOP nomination.
.....Graham is the ninth Republican to formally announce his candidacy for the nomination in 2016 and the third Southern Baptist. Cruz, a U.S. Senator from Texas, is a preachers son and member of First Baptist Church in Houston. Huckabee, former Arkansas governor and Fox News personality who ran for president in 2008, was a pastor and one-time president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention before entering politics in the early 1990s.
Here is the Southern Baptist Convention declaration of spiritual warfare.
Southern Baptists declare spiritual warfare on Supreme Court with resolution denying marriage authority
Southern Baptist Convention President Rev. Ronnie Floyd (SBC/screengrab)
The Southern Baptist Convention declared this week that the Supreme Court did not have the authority to overturn bans on same-sex marriage because they were defending an institution that had been created by God.
At its annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday, the denomination prepared for a Supreme Court ruling that could effectively legalize marriage equality nationwide.
WHEREAS, the redefinition of marriage to include same-sex couples will continue to weaken the institution of the natural family unit and erode the religious liberty and rights of conscience of all who remain faithful to the idea of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife, the resolution said.
Southern Baptists recognize that no governing institution has the authority to countermand Gods definition of marriage, the statement continued. No matter how the Supreme Court rules, the Southern Baptist Convention reaffirms its unwavering commitment to its doctrinal and public beliefs concerning marriage.
In his presidential address to the 5,000 attendees on Tuesday, SBC leader Rev. Ronnie Floyd said that it was time for Christians to declare spiritual warfare.

(45,319 posts)oddly hypocritical. The RCC says these same things, so does LDS, St Rick Warren of the Inauguration and the Vatican invited them all to Rome in November for a 3 day anti gay shindig to defend marriage. Tony Perkins of FRC was invited and loved it. Heritage foundation was there, both founders of NOM and Francis was the keynote speaker.
"The presence of American evangelicals and the LDS Church was particularly notable. Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, and Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, each gave speeches, and representatives from the Heritage Foundation and the Family Research Council in Washington attended. President Henry Eyring of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first presidency spoke and Elder Tom Perry of the LDSs Quorum of the Twelve also joined. In the United States, this trio of faiths has worked together to stand against the governments Affordable Care Acts contraception mandate, but it was the first time they were coming together at the Vatican to talk about marriage."

So how exactly does it work, that some denominations are correctly criticized for bigotry while others who work along side them in an organized fashion to promote that same bigotry are lauded, statements of devotion are made to Francis, and he is held up as authority both moral and intellectual?
At a certain point it is hypocritical to rage against the one while strewing roses in the path of the other.

(88,117 posts)And because I taught many of the national leaders when they were little. Because I grew up in that church. This present fundamentalist movement began partly in the area where I taught.

I don't remember strewing roses for the others.
Geez, haven't been called hypocritical in a while.

(51,076 posts)and I ran as fast and as far away from religion as I could get once I realize what a scam it all is. What woke me up was when I went to church with a friend and it was a different denomination than SB but yet they were saying the same thing. If you don't belong to this church you're going to hell. Didn't take much of that for me to realize that I want no part of any of this.
Happy non religious person for 53 years now. Nearing the end of my life and I still feel the same way. When I die it will be no different that the life ending of the bug that hit my windshield last evening. I will simply be dead.
