In his own words, Roof wrote in his manifesto that he hadnt grown up in a racist household, nor were his friends particularly racist. The white kids and black kids at his school would make racial jokes at each other, and jokes were jokes.
Then the killing of Trayvon Martin dominated the news cycle, and caught Roofs attention:
The event that truly awakened me was the Trayvon Martin case. I kept hearing and seeing his name, and eventually I decided to look him up. I read the Wikipedia article and right away I was unable to understand what the big deal was. It was obvious that Zimmerman was in the right. But more importantly this prompted me to type in the words black on White crime into Google, and I have never been the same since that day. The first website I came to was the Council of Conservative Citizens. There were pages upon pages of these brutal black on White murders. I was in disbelief. At this moment I realized that something was very wrong.
Dr. Sam Francis founded the CCC in 1985, and called it The countrys most effective conservative activist group. He was also a syndicated writer for the Washington Times.
.......................
The Council of Conservative Citizens, supports, among other things:
That the United States is a Christian country.
That the people of the United States are part of the European people, no one else.
Cultural, national and racial integrity A.K.A. xenophobia.
States Rights, the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and the Bill of Rights.
That the traditional family is the only worthy family no same sex marriage, interracial marriage, or any homosexual tendencies in society to be accepted under law.
Women and gays should not serve in the military
After researching deeper, Roof says he became racially aware:
As an American we are taught to accept living in the melting pot, and black and other minorities have just as much right to be here as we do, since we are all immigrants. But Europe is the homeland of White people, and in many ways the situation is even worse there. From here I found out about the Jewish problem and other issues facing our race, and I can say today that I am completely racially aware.

Notable, typing Council of Conservative Citizens into Google right now turns up a CofCC website, which is so busy that only the Google cache of the website is alive. The Council of Conservative Citizens calls itself a conservative activist group. Most of the pages on the Council of Conservative Citizens website are returning a 404 error as of this writing.

(14,093 posts)Ann Coulter tried to say they werent racist and said they were just a harmless, mainstream conservative group.she downplayed ther rhetoric and told her readers this group of avowed white supreacists were the victims of liberal persecution.
Trent Lott addressed their convention and invited their leaders to DC. CCC members chaired his campaign and his uncle is a member.
Both Mike Huckabee and Chris McDaniel addressed their convention.
And conservative favorite Bob Barr has deep ties to the group.
All of this is easily Googled.

(84,711 posts)Unless he had a Tri-pod and old fashioned camera or some way to set his Mobile Phone up to take those photos with a "Remote Button" then WHO TOOK THEM?
His Mentor? Or he was just skillful.
The "Daily Mail" (I know) but it has many photos of him all around Historic Charleston Sites. Who took them? Who led him from site to site taking photos. He's got to be a camera whiz.

But, we need to know more about what was going on there that a kid who seems to have not finished highschool...just hanging around would pull all the history together about that Church its Congregation and Slavery to go to Historic Sites to figure out how exactly he was going to execute this dreadful crime right on the anniversary of the Slave Uprising and Massacre. Seems awfully well thought out unless he was a latent genius ..with a great interest in Historic Charleston and Slavery that he could visit everyone of those Historic Sites taking selfies as he devised his plot to strike at such a time for maximum exposure. Hillary Clinton had just left after giving a talk at the Tech College and Jeb was coming in next day. Bernie was scheduled for this Sunday Night.
That guy was some real good planner for a drug addicted, possibly abused, 21 year old who had dropped out of high school off and on.
We don't know enough yet about any influence on him. But, what he did is so dreadful its hard to think about anything else.

(90,767 posts)he already believed to be true. As evidenced by his own words.
He claims he wasn't raised in a racist environment but he discounts being raised in a state that clings to a racist history like it was a family heirloom of great importance. He speaks of making racist jokes as if it was no big deal. Which tells us he was already well versed in racial stereotypes and bigoted speech. He then says, "Me and White friends would sometimes would watch things that would make us think that 'blacks were the real racists' ".
ALL this before he goes looking on line for sites/racist forums that confirm what he already thinks. Roof went looking for others to bolster what he already thought and he found them.
If you type in "Trayvon Martin" in a search engine, you're going to get a plethora of sites, both in support of and against what happened. Roof chose material that agreed with what he already believed. He didn't have to, and chances are he clicked on other links - even those that expressed outrage over what happened - but that wasn't what he was looking for. So then he goes searching for the phrase, "black on White crime". When I type the phrase into Google, the first site isn't the CCC. He went looking for forums that agreed with what he already thought. And, of course, he found them - they are out there in great numbers.
Then he expanded his search for more sites that also agreed with him. No. Sorry. Dylann Roof was already a racist. The CCC site fed that hate, as that is the point of the CCC - to appeal to racists and give them a sense of belonging. But we should never pretend Roof was some kid who just happened to stumble upon racism because of an on line site. He went looking with a purpose and with the already existing belief that African-Americans were the problem.
There was plenty of information out there to challenge his racist beliefs, instead he chose only to confirm them

The perpetrator of the Charleston spree killing has been arrested. The suspect is 21 year old Dylann Storm Roof. The shooter was probably targeting blacks out of racial hatred. A victim of the shooting says that Roof expressed anger over black on white rape. However, he killed more black women than black men. He had previously been arrested twice while engaging in extremely suspicious activity at the Columbiana Centre, a popular mall, in Columbia, SC. These arrests took place last February and April.
He was also allegedly abusing anti-depressants and other drugs. He had a pending felony drug charge for Suboxone, meth, LSD, and cocaine. The 21 year old was a lone wolf that is not believed to have ever been a member of an organization. Friends say he was never active in politics and had lots of black friends in High School.
Roof also has a Facebook page created earlier in 2015. He had over 80 Facebook friends and 25% of them are black. The media is focused on a picture uploaded May 21st that shows Roof with patches on his jacket representing the old flag of South Africa, and the old flag of Rhodesia. It is unclear what caused Roof to go on the shooting spree. It seems that Roofs interest in racial politics started only very recently.
It is a relief that the perpetrator has been caught. However, the loss of nine lives is devastating. It cost also have severe consequences in terms of race relations in the US in general, and South Carolina in particular. The attack was similar to when ISIS bombs Shiite mosques. It is to incite the other side to retaliate and create a situation where the violence between the two sides spirals out of control.
We pray, for the sake of all Americans, that there will not be an escalation of racial tension. It is also newsworthy that the shooter is alleged to have been a heavy users of SSRI anti-depressants. A very high percentage of spree killers in the United States have been on this drug. Side effects of SSRIs include homicidal rage.

(10,252 posts)So much for learning about critical thinking. Don't they teach that in school any more? Just because something is printed in a book, or broadcast on TV or radio, or published on a RW web site doesn't mean it's "the truth." Dylan Roof is exactly the type of person that RW hate-mongers try to recruit.
And where were his parents when he dropped out of school? Where were his parents when he started sporting Confederate and Appartheid emblems on his jacket? Where were his teachers and older relatives?
