Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney joined a growing chorus of Americans calling for the state of South Carolina to take down the Confederate flag, calling it a symbol of hatred and divisiveness, only to have conservative followers of his turn on him.
Attention has once again returned to the flag flown at the state capital of South Carolina, home of the birthplace of the confederacy, following the shooting of nine black churchgoers by Dylann Root, who sported Confederate flags on his car.
Friday night, South Carolina state Rep. Norman Doug Brannon (R) said he plans on introducing a bill to remove the Confederate flag near his states capitol building, adding, Im not a politician tonight. But I do have access, and I will introduce that bill in December,
Saturday morning on Twitter, Romney wrote, Take down the #ConfederateFlag at the SC Capitol. To many, it is a symbol of racial hatred. Remove it now to honor #Charleston victims.

(58,179 posts)They don't want to take a position on this (Super Tuesday concerns), but they desperately want access to Mitt's vast and deep donor list.

(4,119 posts)...have also called for removing the flag. It will be the northern/western state republicans that will eventually bring down the flag.

(65,616 posts)South Carolina has been forgiven, because some really do believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ. In payment, the flag of the Confederates needs to be placed in a museum to be discussed as a relic of the past.
Racism lost to unconditional love and now the symbol of racism needs to be removed from the state capitol.

(42,714 posts)It may be the only thing I've ever agreed with him on, but he has been right on this and it cost him politically: after saying South Carolina shouldn't be flying the confederate flag in 2008, he had robo-calls placed against him by flag worshippers and he finished fourth in the SC primary.

(3,580 posts)It would never occur to me to vote for him and he was tragically out of touch but I respected him as a decent human being.

(10,893 posts)on that page, I can't help but feel bad for the guy. He gets piled on by people from his own side just for questioning the history of the flag. People like those commenters disgust me (especially the one talking about caving to "race-baiters" . They make it hard to maintain faith in humanity. There's no hope for them to ever change and stop being racist assholes if not even Romney can talk some sense into them. Fuck those commenters, fuck that flag, and fuck everyone else who defends it and what it stands for. That flag should either be burned or made into toilet paper!
I never thought I'd do this about any issue, but I have to give Willard his props here. It took guts to buck a huge part of his own side of the spectrum and piss off the racists.
Now let's hear Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, and the rest of the 2016 GOP hopefuls follow his lead.
