Thousands should march to the SC State Capitol and Cut Down the Flag.

Last edited Thu Jun 18, 2015, 05:10 PM - Edit history (1)

The Confederate battle flag still flies at the top of its flagpole there. The people of South Carolina should march to that flag pole, cut the rope and throw that flag into a nearby trash receptacle.

It represents the racism that caused the death of those people in the Church. The killer has a Confederate States of America license plate on the front of his car. That this emblem of slavery and racism is still flying high is the ultimate insult to the POC in South Carolina. They and their allies should simply march to the Capitol Building and cut that flag down and discard it.

That act would express their disgust at the obscenity that is the Confederate Battle Flag.

Well, it's THEIR turn now. And they can just start figuring out how to get over some obsolete and utterly SINFUL "grievance" that dates back almost 200 years ago. The Civil War is OVER. They LOST. THEY need to get over it. And if they won't do it voluntarily, then maybe we have to MAKE them do it.

OR, I suppose they could always make good on that cocky, asshole-y threat that rick perry likes to insinuate, to secede - and I'd say "good riddance!"

There was a march on the Statehouse on MLK day in 2000 that was estimated at 40,000. As a result, the flag was taken off the dome and placed behind a Confederate monument on the grounds, where it remains to this day.

While there are still calls to remove it, a majority of the Legislature does not want to reopen that debate. It will be interesting to see if this incident changes that, but since they won't be back in session again until next January the momentum will likely die down.

From Mineral Man on Free Republic (just what I can find on short notice)
After 4 years and a little over 23,000 posts on Free Republic, I'm taking my leave, probably permanently. The recent election, and a number of other things makes this a good time to quit posting on political topics and devote my time to pursuits that actually have identifiable results.

I've made a lot of friends, and more than a few enemies here. I've tried, with varying degrees of success, to post in a reasonable way about subjects that interest me. I've had many people post kind words. I've also been called a troll, a liberal, a DUer, and much, much worse. I'm none of those things. I've even had one death threat sent to me via FReepmail, which I dealt with in my own way.

I don't think so. It is time for symbolic action against symbolic racism. Black people are armed as well. Make a stand, as was done when the KKK decided to go after black people in another time. The time is over for acceptance of institutionalized racism in South Carolina and other states where it is endemic.

Volunteers only. I would gladly volunteer, and I'm an old white guy. I live far from there. I cannot go. If I lived there, though, I would not abide the banner of slavery flying at my state's Capitol building. At some point, a stand must be made.

Fuck Nikki Haley and the racists in South Carolina. Those who are not racists should march with the rest to the Capitol.

International tourism is at an all-time high. Tourism from within this country also. Cruise ships call regularly at the port. Thousands of new homes are being built to keep up with demand.

In an ironic sort of way, this may actually move Charleston to the Left, as old-timers are displaced by people from rational environs.

but that is part of a systemic infection, in america, that is bursting out in racist abscesses that are filling full of hate infected pus all over this land. Those abscesses are going to burst, sooner or later, and truly cause a complete systemic infection. That's all I'm saying, but I'm right there with you, let the flag burn as a symbol of burning the hate it represents. And scatter the ashes.

by outfits like Fox News and the like who stir up hatred for profit. One would think religion might be a solace from hatred in the US, but yet that carries the infection too and is often a root cause of hatred. It's just a very hateful country. Certainly not all people, but I'm astounded by the hatred and ignorance often displayed by many in the US.

Finally, though it may sound hyperbolic, I don't know why the Confederate flag should be given any higher regard than the Nazi flag.

Wish they would march together, arm in arm, in Solidarity.
Let Gov Haley stand and watch as she cries those fake tears.
There are far bigger better people in this world than her & the assholes she empowers.
Bill Clinton and any others should join the front row in marching.

It was the same old Southern racists that went after Bill & Hillary both, 25 yrs ago.
Bill Clinton had the Black votes & the GOP could do nothing to stop it, and they did everything they could from there on to see that would never happen again.

Clinton walked in & grabbed GHW Bush's second term from him.
Gerrymandering, voter frard & suppression, & the manipulation of ourSupreme Court in selecting GW as President, when the voters would have chosen otherwise, was ramped up into overdrive.

The Black voting block would be suppressed in the Deep South.
The whole RW stench is still wafting strong today.

It will take our Dem Candidates and another MLK walking arm in arm to put this to rest again.
History repeats itself because it is allowed to.

This is a sorrowful day for our America.
Pathetic, shamful & sad.
Thanks for allowing my rant.

that is the way to handle this flag question. That will mean more permanent change.

Tear down the flag and you incite the white supremacists who have incorporated it as their battle flag, to more violence. Citizen pressure for the state to remove it-- is a much more powerful message to them. Protest for the state to take down the flag but don't literally remove that particular flag. These racist people are very literal. You would be waving the red flag in front of the bull and the bullies would charge.

100. I'm in agreement with protesting but
Fri Jun 19, 2015, 07:17 AM
Jun 2015

the symbolic act of ripping down the flag wouldn't accomplish much. It could easily incite even more violence.

Until things really change in SC, they will replace the flag and they will fly the flag.

Work for real change. Then the flag goes into the dust bins of history where it belongs. No longer officially sanctioned.

The problem is, we are so numb to this kind of violence you probably won't even see any protest. I wish I could believe that people care enough to do anything. We are so divided and self-absorbed that most people (white liberals included) will see this as "crazy kid goes berserk--doesn't concern me."

We have been divided and conquered--the goal to keep the races divided and downtrodden, so they don't know the real problem is the capitalist exploiters.

Go ahead--organize a protest and burn a confederate flag--but leave that one there so we can see exactly how long it's going to take to change South Carolina.

We can uproot it with a truck, then cut the whole flagpole into pieces with a reciprocating saw and sell it for scrap at the local junkyard. We can use the flag itself as the kindling for a barbecue. The barbecue would be in the interests of the good parts of the South, and if we waited a couple of weeks for Independence Day, it would be about America.
