(53,961 posts)And if discovered the shooter is Christian? What does this tell them? There are those who will do whatever they can to avoid the obvious; this was a hate crime, an act of terrorism against the African-American community.
In this country, Christians are not the ones being hunted, actual minority people are, and the fact some are Christian doesn't indicate a trend of anti-Christian bias, just a reminder other factors are more insidious to bigots.

That's why he picked a church that was two hours away that was an AME church that had a black state senator as a pastor.
Because he hated Christians. And he's the thing, even if it's hostility towards Christians, it's still a hate crime.

When news broke that a young white man had gunned down nine people in a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, Wednesday night, most people quickly seemed to infer that racial animus was a likely motivation for the attack, especially once authorities began referring to it as a hate crime.
Not the cast of Fox & Friends. This morning the show brought on E.W. Jackson, a black pastor and former lieutenant governor candidate in Virginia known for referring to the gay rights movement as a cancer and President Obama as a radical anti-American and anti-Christian. Without mentioning the possiblity that the killings were racially motivated, Jackson explained that he was worried about the fact that the attack happened at a church.
Were urging people wait for the facts, dont jump to conclusions, Jackson said. But Im telling you, Im deeply concerned that this gunman chose to go into a church, because there does seem to be a rising hostility against Christians across this country because of our biblical views. I just think its something that we have to be aware of and not create an atmosphere in which people take out their violent intentions against Christians.

(17,651 posts)Fox is STILL having heads (and guests)whining about christian persecution while at the same time has typewritten quotes of FBI statistics on racial violence against blacks (aka hate crimes) in the upper righthand corner. Of course the words racial, racist, terrorist, white supremacist, etc. are completely absent from the oral conversation.
How bizarre that was. I guess fox assumes their viewers are too illiterate to read or too stupid to put it all together.
I'm also ashamed of black folks interviewed on Fox that avoid the racist angle and only mention the words christians, religion and church.

There are plenty of white American Christians who do recognize their privilege and work their asses off for social justice, and who can and do practice intellectual honesty.
I say this as a non-Christian, btw, who has worked directly with various folks who do identify as Christians in racial/social justice activism, #blacklivesmatter movement, etc. They are very aware of their privilege.

This wasnt persecution against Christians, it wasnt some blitz attack by Muslims or atheists or devil worshipers, it was a cold, calculated hate crime pulled off by one deranged white man, following the right-wing extremist doctrine that black people are bad for America.

No matter how much the right tries to blame this on Christian persecution, it is a hate crime. The FBI is investigating it as such, and like Chief Mullen said, nobody will ever forget it.

If it is a hate crime to hurt lets say a moslem as in another high profile shooting
then the same religous logic making that a hate crime must be followed in this
case of gunning down good churchgoing Christians.
Just having enough hate in your soul to kill another person is a hate crime in itself.

You have families who are grieving beyond belief. and there is nothing to justify any killing of someone because their skin isn't clear. (10,303 posts)If (in some weird alternative reality) I decide to walk into a church on a Sunday morning, carrying in some automatic machine gun and I start spraying bullets around shouting "f*** you Jesus" ... doesn't that mean I hate Christians?
I thought a hate crime was when an individual identifying with one ethnic and/or religious group decides to commit an atrocity against someone of a different ethnicity and/or religion.
A hate crime is a hate crime is a hate crime. White vs black, Muslim vs Christian, Catholic vs Protestant, Hutu vs Tutsi - whichever way you view it one group is hating on another.
What happened in Charleston yesterday was most definitely a hate crime. The murderer was white, the victims were not. I don't know the religion of the murderer but from the witness their religion wasn't the reason the murderer took away their lives. However if the guy said "You Jesus-worshippers make me sick - die ***** !!!" it'd still be a hate crime.
as for the above referenced people in the OP - they need to grow up and know it's a f'n hate crime. period.

(17,199 posts)... he was outraged that conservatives tried to pretend that the victims were targeted because they were Christian.
I know we talk about race a lot on this show, but I think we can all agree this time that this is a racially motivated attack, Wilmore said. It couldnt be clearer when it comes out of the killers mouth. But even with all of that evidence, on a day like today, Fox News just makes my f*cking head explode.
He played a barrage of video clips from Thursday mornings Fox and Friends horror show, where the hosts described the terrorist act as a horrific attack on faith.
I know you guys dont want to admit that racial stuff isnt going on, but how can there be any doubt when it came out of the gunmans mouth? He told his victims, I want to shoot black people. I think when he says black people, he means black people and not Christians.
